How is this fair?
Hollywood superstar Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is once again at the center of a political firestorm after reaffirming that he plans to keep his personal political views private—a decision that sparked fierce criticism from several outspoken liberal celebrities.
Johnson’s comments quickly ignited debate across social media, with critics accusing him of remaining silent during a deeply divided political climate, while supporters praised his decision to stay out of partisan battles.
The backlash began after Johnson told Esquire that he has grown weary of today’s toxic political environment and wants to focus on what matters most to him: creating movies, telling stories, and entertaining audiences.
That explanation did little to satisfy some Hollywood figures.
Actor George Takei, known for his role in Star Trek, criticized Johnson on social media after the interview gained attention.
Takei argued that refusing to publicly engage in politics makes someone “complicit,” suggesting that remaining silent during major political debates is itself a political statement.
Actor Wil Wheaton also weighed in, reportedly calling Johnson “such a coward” in a social media post that was later deleted.
The criticism quickly spread online, fueling another round of debate over whether celebrities have a responsibility to publicly support political causes.
Not everyone agreed with the attacks.
Comedian Matt Rife defended Johnson while mocking Wheaton’s criticism.
Posting on X, Rife joked that calling Johnson a coward was ironic considering the actor’s size and athletic background. He also suggested that social media encourages people to make bold remarks they likely would never make face-to-face.
The controversy stems from Johnson’s recent cover interview with Esquire, where he explained why he no longer intends to publicly discuss politics.
Johnson said experience taught him that his greatest responsibility is focusing on his work rather than participating in America’s increasingly bitter political fights.
According to the actor, filmmaking, storytelling, and creating entertainment are now his priorities.
He acknowledged there may still be occasions when he chooses to speak out on important issues, but emphasized that modern politics has become dominated by constant attacks, negativity, and division.
Johnson said he dislikes the endless political mudslinging and wants to keep his political beliefs between himself and the ballot box.
His position represents a significant shift from previous election cycles.
Although Johnson identifies as an Independent, he publicly endorsed former President Joe Biden during the 2020 presidential election.
However, ahead of the 2024 election, Johnson announced that he would no longer endorse presidential candidates.
Speaking with Fox News host Will Cain, Johnson explained that while he believed endorsing Biden was the right decision at the time, he later realized the endorsement created far more political division than he expected.
Johnson said watching Americans become increasingly divided was deeply troubling and ultimately convinced him to step away from political endorsements altogether.
He stressed that his decision was not driven by fear of criticism.
Instead, he said he believes his influence is better used by bringing people together rather than encouraging voters to support one political party over another.
His latest comments have once again sparked a broader national conversation about the role of celebrities in politics.
While some Americans believe public figures have a responsibility to speak out on political issues, others argue entertainers should remain focused on their professions and allow voters to make their own decisions without celebrity influence.
Johnson has not publicly responded to the latest criticism, and his representatives did not immediately issue a statement following requests for comment.
