Here’s what happened.
President Donald Trump and Taylor Swift are once again at the center of a political and cultural controversy after the pop superstar’s music disappeared from videos posted by Trump-affiliated social media accounts.
The latest episode adds another chapter to the complicated relationship between Trump and one of America’s most famous entertainers — two figures who have repeatedly found themselves on opposite sides of the political divide.
This time, the controversy involves Taylor Swift’s music, the Trump campaign’s social media operation and questions surrounding copyright and music licensing on TikTok.
Taylor Swift Song Disappears From Trump Video
The controversy began after the official Team Trump TikTok account posted a video Tuesday showing President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump watching a fireworks display.
Swift’s song “August,” from her 2020 album Folklore, could be heard playing in the background.
The Trump account appeared to recognize that using Swift’s music would attract attention, adding a tongue-in-cheek message to the post.
“I’m sure @Taylor Swift is going to be super excited we used her song!” the caption stated.
The music did not remain available on the video.
The Swift song was subsequently removed, with TikTok displaying a message saying the copyright owner had not made the sound available in the viewer’s country.
The development immediately generated attention because of the history between Trump and Swift.
However, there is an important distinction: The available information does not establish that Swift personally demanded that the song be removed.
Neither the White House nor Swift’s representatives reportedly responded to media requests for comment about the situation.
Second Trump Post Also Loses Swift Music
It wasn’t an isolated incident.
Another recent Team Trump post reportedly used music associated with Swift’s hit album Red.
This time, the Trump campaign used the album title to make a political joke about the Republican Party.
“Did you know Taylor Swift wrote a whole album about the color of the Republican Party?” the caption read.
Red has traditionally been associated with Republicans on American electoral maps, making the reference an obvious political play on the title of Swift’s enormously successful album.
The Swift music was later removed from that post as well.
The disappearance of music from two Trump-related videos quickly renewed attention on the long-running political tensions involving the president and the singer.
Trump and Taylor Swift Have a Complicated History
Trump and Swift have not exactly hidden their political differences.
Swift became increasingly vocal about politics in the years leading up to the 2024 presidential election, using her massive public platform to discuss voting and political candidates.
She ultimately endorsed Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris during the 2024 campaign.
Trump responded with one of his characteristically brief and attention-grabbing social media messages.
“I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT!” Trump wrote on Truth Social at the time.
The statement quickly made headlines across the country and cemented the political divide between the Republican leader and the music superstar.
Trump’s latest use of Swift’s songs is therefore especially noteworthy.
The campaign wasn’t merely using popular background music. Its captions directly acknowledged Swift and even joked about the Republican Party’s connection to the title Red.
Trump Recently Praised Travis Kelce News
There has also been a surprising twist in the Trump-Swift relationship.
Despite Trump’s previous criticism of Swift, the president recently reacted positively to a report involving her husband, NFL star Travis Kelce.
Kelce reportedly arrived at the recently renamed Donald J. Trump International Airport in Palm Beach with the couple’s new dog.
Trump responded enthusiastically to the news.
“So cool!!!” he wrote.
The reaction was considerably warmer than his previous remarks about Swift and showed that the public back-and-forth involving Trump and the celebrity couple isn’t always predictable.
Did Taylor Swift Have Trump’s Videos Muted?
That remains the biggest unanswered question.
It would be easy to assume that Swift personally ordered the songs removed because of her political differences with Trump. But without confirmation from Swift, her representatives, TikTok or the relevant copyright holder, that conclusion would go beyond the publicly available facts.
Music rights on social media can be complicated.
Songs can become unavailable because of copyright claims, licensing restrictions, geographic limitations or decisions involving rights holders and social media platforms.
What is known is that Swift’s music was initially featured in the Trump-affiliated posts and later became unavailable.
Given Trump and Swift’s political history, that was more than enough to spark another round of attention.
Taylor Swift’s Political Influence Remains Significant
The controversy also raises a larger question about celebrity influence in American politics.
Swift commands an enormous following in the United States and around the world. Her comments about elections and political candidates can instantly generate national headlines and reach millions of people.
But whether celebrity endorsements actually change large numbers of votes remains a separate question.
Many Americans — particularly older voters who have participated in numerous election cycles — may be more focused on pocketbook and policy concerns such as inflation, retirement security, taxes, immigration, public safety and national security than on the political preferences of Hollywood stars and musicians.
Nevertheless, political campaigns understand the enormous attention that celebrities can generate.
And few celebrities generate more attention than Taylor Swift.
Trump Continues to Dominate the Culture Wars
Trump has spent years challenging prominent entertainers, television personalities, athletes and other public figures who criticize him.
His willingness to respond directly has helped turn disagreements that might otherwise remain confined to entertainment news into national political stories.
Swift represents an especially significant opponent in that arena because her cultural reach extends far beyond politics.
That makes any interaction between the Trump and Swift camps almost guaranteed to attract attention.
This latest controversy is no exception.
Two Trump-affiliated social media posts featured Swift’s music. Both later lost access to that music. And because of the history between the president and the singer, the episode has quickly become another political and cultural flashpoint.
Whether Swift herself had anything to do with the songs disappearing remains unclear.
But one thing is certain: When Donald Trump and Taylor Swift collide, Americans pay attention.
And this latest fight may not be the last.
