Sen. John Curtis of Utah is sharply criticizing an arrangement involving Donald Trump Jr. and a Russian businessman with ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin, calling the situation “corruption” and signaling that he plans to speak out further.
The Republican senator made the comments after reports revealed that Russian businessman Umar Kremlev helped pay for expensive celebrations surrounding Trump Jr.’s wedding in the Bahamas earlier this year.
Curtis said in a social media video that a Russian billionaire financed an extravagant post-wedding celebration for Donald Trump Jr., an arrangement he described as deeply troubling and corrupt.
Curtis added that Americans would be hearing more from him about the matter, describing the controversy as a significant issue.
Russian Businessman Reportedly Paid Major Expenses
The dispute stems from an investigation by ProPublica, which reported that Kremlev covered hundreds of thousands of dollars in expenses associated with Trump Jr.’s three-day wedding celebration in May.
According to records and interviews reviewed by the news organization, Kremlev paid to rent one of the private islands used during the festivities and covered other major expenses.
Kremlev leads the International Boxing Association, and ProPublica has reported that he maintains close connections with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Trump Jr. and his wife, Bettina Trump, have acknowledged that Kremlev hosted portions of the celebration.
Bettina Trump said their friend had generously hosted two nights of festivities following the couple’s wedding ceremony. She emphasized that the events occurred after the wedding itself, which she described as a private family ceremony.
Trump Says His Son Repaid the Money
President Trump addressed the controversy Friday and said he understood that his son had reimbursed Kremlev for the expenses.
Trump also defended the original arrangement, saying that accepting such hospitality was permitted.
That response introduces an important question into the developing story: whether reimbursement changes concerns raised by lawmakers about accepting such a substantial benefit from a foreign businessman connected to Russia’s political establishment.
No public finding cited in the reporting has established that Trump Jr. committed corruption or violated the law. Curtis’ use of the word “corruption” represents the senator’s characterization of the arrangement.
Republican Senators React
Curtis is not the only Republican senator expressing concern.
North Carolina Sen. Thom Tillis also spoke out against the arrangement, describing it in strongly negative terms.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune of South Dakota took a more cautious approach when reporters asked him about the controversy.
Thune said he had heard some of the reporting but did not yet know enough about the details to make a judgment.
The differing responses illustrate how the story is creating an unusual debate inside the Republican Party, with some GOP senators openly questioning an arrangement involving the president’s eldest son while others are waiting for additional information.
Congressional Investigation Begins
The controversy has also drawn attention from House Democrats.
Rep. Robert Garcia of California, the ranking Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, announced an investigation into Trump Jr.’s relationship with Kremlev and requested financial records and other documents connected to the wedding payments.
Garcia said the arrangement raised what he characterized as national-security and public-corruption concerns.
That investigation does not itself establish wrongdoing, but it could bring additional financial details about the arrangement into public view.
Questions Remain Over Trump Jr.’s Relationship With Kremlev
ProPublica reported that Kremlev attended the relatively small wedding gathering along with several other Russian guests and paid significant expenses connected with the celebration.
Representatives for Kremlev have characterized his relationship with Trump Jr. as personal rather than political, while Trump Jr. and his wife have rejected suggestions that the wedding gift was connected to political influence.
President Trump’s statement that his son later reimbursed Kremlev could become another focus as lawmakers and reporters seek additional documentation surrounding the payments.
For many Americans, especially voters who expect transparency from public officials and their families regardless of party, the larger issue may come down to what happened, when the money was repaid and whether anything was expected in return.
Curtis has made clear that he believes those questions deserve more attention.
“You’ll hear more from me later on,” the Utah Republican said. “This is a big deal.”
With a congressional investigation underway and Republican senators now publicly weighing in, the controversy surrounding Donald Trump Jr.’s wedding celebrations may continue to generate scrutiny as additional details emerge.
