Florida’s closely watched race for governor has taken another unexpected turn, with one prominent election forecaster moving the contest into its most competitive category just weeks before voters head to the polls.
Decision Desk HQ announced Wednesday that Florida’s 2026 gubernatorial race between Republican Rep. Byron Donalds and Democrat David Jolly has moved from “Leans Republican” to “Toss Up.” The change came after Decision Desk HQ reported that the contest had been steadily tightening during September.
The development is notable in a state that has become increasingly Republican in recent election cycles and where GOP candidates have enjoyed several commanding statewide victories.
Florida Governor’s Race Suddenly Tightens
Donalds entered the race with considerable political advantages.
President Donald Trump endorsed him during the Republican primary, helping Donalds consolidate support on his way to becoming the GOP nominee.
Jolly, meanwhile, has taken an unusual political path. The former Florida congressman previously served as a Republican before eventually becoming a Democrat.

Decision Desk HQ said on September 16 that Donalds’ position in its forecast had declined while Jolly was gaining ground from week to week. At the time, the organization said the race was approaching Toss Up territory.
One week later, that change became official.
Decision Desk HQ Moves Florida To “Toss Up”
On September 23, Decision Desk HQ formally moved Florida’s governor race into its Toss Up category.
That rating generally reflects a race the forecaster considers highly competitive rather than one with a clear partisan advantage.
The change represents a substantial shift from expectations earlier in the election cycle and adds Florida to the list of gubernatorial contests attracting increased national attention.
Decision Desk HQ is not alone in viewing the race as increasingly competitive.
Sabato’s Crystal Ball and Inside Elections have also adjusted their ratings of the Florida contest in a more competitive direction during the campaign.

Big Change From Florida’s 2022 Election
The tightening race stands in stark contrast to Florida’s previous gubernatorial contest.
Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis defeated Democratic challenger Charlie Crist by a wide margin in 2022, reinforcing Florida’s movement toward Republicans in statewide elections.
Four years later, however, the political environment is different.
DeSantis cannot seek another consecutive term because of term limits, leaving Donalds and Jolly competing to become Florida’s next governor.
