Nobody expected to hear this.
President Donald Trump has stunned political observers by making surprisingly favorable comments about Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, one of his most outspoken political opponents.
During a campaign rally in Michigan on Sunday, October 25, Trump took aim at several prominent Democrats but unexpectedly singled out the New York congresswoman for a rare compliment.
“Somehow, I don’t mind AOC that much,” Trump told supporters.
“I don’t know why, she doesn’t bug me too much,” he added.
The remarks immediately stood out because Trump and Ocasio-Cortez have spent years on opposite sides of some of America’s biggest political debates.
And this was not the first time the president had recently made a surprisingly positive statement about the progressive Democrat.
Trump Makes Unexpected Admission About AOC
Trump’s comments came as he discussed the group of progressive Democratic lawmakers commonly known as “The Squad.”
The president has repeatedly criticized the group’s positions on immigration, economic policy, government spending, and other national issues.
However, during Sunday’s appearance, Trump made an unexpected distinction between Ocasio-Cortez and some of her Democratic colleagues.
While discussing the lawmakers, he referred to the group using his familiar phrase, “AOC plus three.”
But rather than directing his usual criticism toward Ocasio-Cortez, Trump acknowledged that she does not bother him as much as others in the group.
It was an unusual moment for a president who has frequently challenged her political positions and publicly questioned the direction of the progressive movement.
The comments did not amount to a political endorsement, but they revealed a noticeably different attitude toward one of his longtime critics.
Trump Previously Praised Ocasio-Cortez at Kansas Rally
What makes Trump’s latest remarks even more interesting is that he expressed a similar opinion just days earlier.
During an October 19 rally in Park City, Kansas, Trump discussed several prominent Democratic politicians, including Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar and Michigan Rep. Rashida Tlaib.
When Ocasio-Cortez’s name came up, the president again offered an unexpectedly favorable comparison.
“I like AOC better,” Trump declared.
“You know, she’s doing her thing,” he continued.
Those remarks suggest Trump’s Michigan comments were not simply a one-time observation.
Instead, the president has now publicly expressed a comparatively favorable personal opinion of Ocasio-Cortez at two separate campaign events within a week.
He has not explained precisely why he views her differently from some of her Democratic colleagues.
President Criticizes Other Progressive Democrats
Although Trump showed an unusually mild attitude toward Ocasio-Cortez, he did not extend the same treatment to other members of the Democratic Party.
During his Michigan rally, Trump sharply criticized Rep. Ilhan Omar and renewed his call for her resignation from Congress.
The president raised allegations about Omar’s personal history, which she has disputed.
He also used the appearance to criticize progressive immigration policies and argue that Democrats have taken the country in the wrong direction.
His comments reflected the broader message he has delivered during the final weeks of the 2026 midterm campaign.
Trump has emphasized border security, economic policy, and the importance of Republican control of Congress.
Against that backdrop, his unexpectedly favorable treatment of Ocasio-Cortez drew additional attention.
Trump and AOC Still Disagree on Major Issues
Despite the president’s surprising remarks, there is little indication that the political relationship between Trump and Ocasio-Cortez has fundamentally changed.
The two remain divided over major questions involving the federal government’s role in American life.
Ocasio-Cortez has supported progressive proposals such as the Green New Deal, expanded healthcare programs, and higher taxes on wealthy Americans.
Trump, meanwhile, has promoted lower taxes, increased domestic energy production, deregulation, and tougher immigration enforcement.
These differences extend beyond individual policies.
The president and the New York congresswoman represent competing political approaches that have shaped national debates for years.
Ocasio-Cortez has also remained a prominent critic of the Trump administration.
Earlier in October, she criticized administration policies affecting federal student loans and educational opportunities.
For that reason, Trump’s recent praise should be understood as a personal comparison rather than a sign of agreement on major policy questions.
Why the Comments Matter Before the Midterm Elections
The timing of Trump’s remarks is especially noteworthy.
The president made the comments while campaigning in Michigan ahead of the November 3 midterm elections.
Republicans are seeking to maintain their congressional majorities, while Democrats are working to gain seats and increase their influence in Washington.
During Sunday’s event, Trump appeared in support of Republican Mike Rogers, who is running against Democrat Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan’s Senate race.
The president used the rally to promote Republican candidates and criticize Democratic policies.
However, his comments about Ocasio-Cortez introduced an unexpected moment into an otherwise combative campaign message.
The incident also demonstrated that Trump can express a comparatively favorable opinion about an individual Democrat without embracing that politician’s policy agenda.
Could AOC Play a Bigger Role in Democratic Politics?
Ocasio-Cortez remains one of the most recognizable members of the Democratic Party’s progressive wing.
Since entering Congress in 2019, the New York lawmaker has built a national profile through her advocacy for economic and environmental policies and her criticism of Republican leadership.
Her involvement in campaigning for Democratic candidates has also attracted attention as the party considers its political future.
With the 2028 presidential election approaching, questions remain about which figures could emerge as leading Democratic contenders.
Ocasio-Cortez is frequently mentioned in discussions about the party’s future leadership, although she has not announced a presidential campaign.
Whether she eventually pursues higher office remains uncertain.
Still, Trump’s willingness to speak about her in less hostile terms than some other prominent Democrats adds an unexpected dimension to their political relationship.
A Surprising Moment From President Trump
Trump’s recent statements stand out because they depart from the confrontational exchanges that have often characterized his relationship with Ocasio-Cortez.
In the span of just one week, the president has twice offered comparatively favorable comments about the progressive congresswoman.
That does not mean the two agree on immigration, taxes, spending, or the direction of the country.
Nor does it suggest that Trump intends to support her political ambitions.
But the remarks do provide an interesting glimpse into how the president distinguishes between his Democratic opponents.
As the midterm elections approach, Trump remains focused on helping Republicans retain control of Congress and advancing his administration’s priorities.
Yet his unexpected comments about Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez demonstrate that even some of Washington’s most familiar political rivalries can produce a surprising moment.
