Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi recently suggested that President Joe Biden deserves a place on Mount Rushmore, highlighting her view that he is a “Mount Rushmore kind of president.” In an interview on “CBS Sunday Morning,” Pelosi, 84, expressed her belief that Biden, at 81 years old, has been such a consequential leader that he should be considered for the iconic monument in South Dakota. Pelosi was quick to clarify that she does not advocate for removing Theodore Roosevelt, who currently shares space on the monument with Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Abraham Lincoln.

Pelosi’s remarks come amidst a backdrop of significant controversy and debate surrounding Biden’s presidency. Despite Biden’s birth occurring a year after the completion of Mount Rushmore, Pelosi’s praise is intended to bolster his legacy in the face of mounting scrutiny. Biden’s presidency has faced increasing criticism, particularly after a poor debate performance against former President Donald Trump in June, which many believe accelerated doubts about Biden’s capability to govern effectively.

Trump, who is also 78, has previously floated the idea of his own inclusion on Mount Rushmore, although he has denied any direct efforts to make this happen through his administration or through South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem.

Pelosi’s high praise for Biden is seen by some as a countermeasure to speculation that she might have played a role in orchestrating a push for Biden to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race. Reports suggest Pelosi, known for her strategic political maneuvering, might have been involved in encouraging Biden to reconsider his reelection bid. This came after Biden publicly reaffirmed his commitment to run, even as Pelosi and other Democrats, such as Reps. Adam Schiff and Zoe Lofgren, openly discussed the possibility of a new candidate.

Pelosi has denied any direct involvement in pressuring Biden to step down, stating, “No, I wasn’t the leader of any pressure [campaign].” She maintained that her stance was simply to support whatever decision Biden made about his candidacy while advocating for a more aggressive campaign strategy.

Despite this, Biden is reportedly displeased with Pelosi’s behind-the-scenes actions and public statements. When asked about the tension between them, Pelosi reaffirmed her support for Biden, claiming, “He knows that I love him very much,” and emphasized that she has always kept presidential conversations private.

Top Democratic leaders like Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries have also remained tight-lipped about their private discussions with Biden during this tumultuous period, with Schumer reportedly encouraging Biden to consider stepping aside.
