At the state funeral for former President Jimmy Carter, outgoing First Lady Jill Biden seemed to distance herself from Vice President Kamala Harris, sitting next to her in the front row at the National Cathedral but hardly acknowledging her presence. The two shared no apparent pleasantries, with Biden’s demeanor remaining notably frosty. At one point, Harris briefly held Jill Biden’s purse as she got settled, but once it was returned, the two women remained silent, staring straight ahead. Even President Biden, seated on Jill’s other side, appeared disengaged, staring off into the distance with his mouth agape.
Soon after, Jill Biden subtly shifted away from Harris, moving closer to her husband, reinforcing the sense of discomfort between the two.
This wasn’t the first time Jill Biden and Kamala Harris have been caught in what can only be described as a tense public interaction. After the 2020 election, social media buzzed with speculation after the two women seemed to avoid each other during a visit to Arlington National Cemetery on Veterans’ Day, with no smiles or exchanges of any kind. And the situation wasn’t exactly better during recent public events, fueling rumors of a strained relationship between the two high-profile Democratic women.
Despite these awkward moments, it’s hard to ignore the irony that Jill Biden has been seen in much more congenial exchanges with other figures, such as President-elect Donald Trump. At the reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris last month, Biden appeared engaged in friendly conversation with Trump, much to the surprise of observers.
The apparent tensions between Jill Biden and Kamala Harris first gained attention during the 2020 campaign, especially after Harris took President Biden to task over his past opposition to desegregation busing during a heated debate. Jill Biden was reportedly upset by Harris’s aggressive questioning, which only added fuel to the fire of their strained relationship.
While Harris’s spokesperson has tried to downplay the rumors, claiming that the two women have forged a strong working relationship over the past four years, the reality of their public interactions seems to suggest otherwise.
For those who have been watching closely, these subtle yet telling moments only raise more questions about the true nature of the relationship between the First Lady and the Vice President. It’s a far cry from the image of unity that the Biden administration has often tried to project.
