This is going to end badly for the Democrats again.
Despite suffering a crushing defeat as Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate in the 2024 election, Minnesota Democrat Governor Tim Walz has refused to completely rule out the possibility of running for president in 2028.
In a recent interview with The New Yorker Radio Hour, Walz commented on the idea of a presidential bid: “I never had any plans be president or the VP; I was grateful to be asked,” he said. “If I can serve my country, I am going to. And if the American people are like, ‘We tried to run you, and look how that ended up,’ I’m okay with that.”
Walz, who served as a congressman before becoming governor, has acknowledged that he is not necessarily driven by personal ambition. “If I think I could offer something… I would certainly consider that,” he added. This willingness to keep the door open for a future run comes despite the harsh reality of his failed vice-presidential campaign.
Throughout his political career, Walz has faced some significant challenges. During a debate against now-Vice President JD Vance, Walz made a series of missteps, including an awkward comment about “making friends with school shooters,” which was likely a poorly worded reference to meeting with victims of mass shootings. Furthermore, when questioned about misstatements regarding his military rank, he failed to provide a satisfactory answer, settling for calling himself “kind of a knucklehead” rather than addressing the issue head-on.
While Walz has ruled out a Senate run in 2026, he still has the option to run for a third term as governor of Minnesota, though he has not yet committed to that. He remains cautious about his future, noting that while he doesn’t consider himself indispensable, he might still have the right experience if the moment calls for it.
Despite the bitter loss in the 2024 election, Walz remains undeterred. “An old white guy who ran for vice president, you’ll land on your feet pretty well,” he said, though the sting of the defeat lingers.
While President Donald Trump has refrained from endorsing anyone for the 2028 election just yet, many Republican insiders believe JD Vance will emerge as a frontrunner. If history is any guide, Walz’s name could be in the mix once again, though likely on the Republican side of the aisle.
