Now this is funny.
In a headline-grabbing moment that blends faith, humor, and American leadership, Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) called on Catholic leaders around the world to consider a bold idea: President Donald Trump for Pope.
Lindsey Graham Backs “Pope Trump” Talk
Sen. Graham posted Tuesday on X (formerly Twitter):
“Exciting to hear President Trump is open to becoming the next Pope. An outsider, yes—but a strong leader rooted in faith and results. The conclave and faithful Catholics worldwide should keep an open mind. Trump 2028—watching for white smoke!”
His remarks followed President Trump’s playful response to a reporter asking if he had a preferred successor to Pope Francis.
“I’d like to be Pope. That’d be my number one choice,” Trump quipped, sparking headlines worldwide.
Trump Praises Cardinal Dolan, Reflects on Faith
While Trump made clear he has “no preference” on who should lead the Catholic Church, he offered praise for Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York, calling him “a very good man.”
“We’ll see what happens,” Trump said.
President Trump has long connected with faith-based voters. In 2020, he shared with Religion News Service that he identifies as a non-denominational Christian, after being confirmed at a Presbyterian church as a child.
A Papal Election Like No Other
The next Pope will be chosen in a sacred and traditional process. On May 7, the papal conclave begins in the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel. Roughly 120 Cardinals under age 80 will cast secret ballots—up to four times per day—until a new Pope is elected.
After 30 rounds, only the top two candidates are considered.
Though any baptized Catholic male can be elected Pope, he must be ordained a bishop before taking office. While Trump isn’t Catholic clergy, the rules technically allow for such a “dark horse” candidate—fueling the humor and intrigue of the moment.
Pope Francis: A Legacy of Faith
Pope Francis, the first pontiff from the Americas, passed away on April 21—just one day after Easter—following a stroke, the Vatican revealed. His funeral on April 26 drew massive crowds to St. Peter’s Square, as Catholics from around the world mourned the beloved leader.
He was elected in 2013 after just five rounds of voting.
Trump: Always in the Spotlight
While the “Pope Trump” idea may have started as a joke, it reminded the world once again that President Donald J. Trump continues to shape the conversation—not just in America, but on the global stage. His boldness, humor, and connection to Christian values keep him at the heart of political and cultural life.
