Trump’s decision has caused mixed feelings for many.

A prominent group that supported President Trump has decided to rebrand itself following his suggestion that the U.S. take control of Gaza. The organization, previously called Arab Americans for Trump, has now changed its name to Arab Americans for Peace. This shift comes after Trump’s controversial remarks about the U.S. potentially taking over the Gaza Strip, which sparked strong reactions within the community.

Bishara Bahbah, the group’s founder, explained to Reuters that Trump’s suggestion, although well-intentioned, was received negatively by many, including the organization’s members. “We’re firmly opposed to any forced relocation of Palestinians, whether it’s voluntary or involuntary,” Bahbah stated, emphasizing their belief in peace, not displacement.

The controversy began during a joint press conference between President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, where Trump proposed that the U.S. take over Gaza and manage its reconstruction efforts. “The U.S. will take over the Gaza Strip, and we will do a job with it, too,” Trump said, adding that the U.S. would be responsible for dismantling weapons and dangerous explosives left behind. He called for a “different” approach to the situation, warning that continuing the same approach would yield no better results than the past 100 years.

Trump’s proposal, aimed at creating an economic development plan for Gaza, has been met with divided opinions. While some, like Netanyahu, have praised it as a potential solution, others, such as Sen. Rand Paul, have criticized it for straying from the principle of putting America First. Additionally, Hamas condemned the idea, calling it a “recipe for chaos.”

While this plan faces internal and external opposition, Prime Minister Netanyahu voiced his support on Fox News, stating that allowing Gazans who wish to leave to do so could potentially offer a fresh start, if the U.S. were to oversee rebuilding efforts in Gaza.

The situation in Gaza has become a contentious issue within the U.S. political landscape, especially as the 2024 elections approach. Among the divides, the Democratic Party has seen its factions struggle with differing views on Israel, as evidenced by protests and movements such as “Abandon Harris,” which encouraged opposition to pro-Israel candidates. The group now known as Arab Americans for Peace played an important role in Trump’s outreach to Arab Americans, helping him secure pivotal support in areas like Dearborn, Michigan, a key battleground with a significant Arab-American population.
