Here’s what conservatives need to know.
Due to extreme cold weather conditions expected for Washington, D.C., President-elect Donald Trump has made the decision to move his inauguration swearing-in ceremony indoors. The U.S. Capitol Rotunda will serve as the venue for the inaugural address and ceremonial prayers, marking a departure from the usual outdoor setting of the National Mall. The decision comes as temperatures are forecast to plummet, with wind chills pushing the mercury into record-low territory.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump explained his reasoning, stating that the predicted Arctic blast sweeping the nation would make conditions dangerously cold, not just for attendees but also for law enforcement, first responders, and the hundreds of thousands of supporters expected to gather. “I don’t want to see people hurt, or injured, in any way,” Trump wrote. “It is dangerous for everyone involved, including the brave men and women in uniform, and the police K9s and horses.”
The National Weather Service is forecasting temperatures to drop into the upper 20s, with wind chills making it feel more like the single digits. Additionally, a potential snowstorm may impact the area the day before the inauguration. Recognizing the severity of the weather, Trump also announced that the Capital One Arena would be open for live viewing of the ceremony and to host the Presidential Parade. After his swearing-in, he plans to join the crowd at the arena.
Despite the shift to indoor ceremonies, the traditional Inaugural Balls will proceed as planned. The Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies has officially confirmed the change of venue. This marks the first time since 1985 that an inauguration has been moved indoors, when President Ronald Reagan’s second swearing-in was held inside due to similar freezing temperatures. The move also harkens back to the early days of the republic when President Thomas Jefferson’s inauguration was held inside the Capitol due to weather concerns.
This pragmatic decision by President-elect Trump reflects his commitment to ensuring the safety of all involved, while still honoring the historic nature of the event. It’s a reminder of the strength and resilience of the American spirit, even in the face of harsh weather conditions.
