Former U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene is issuing a stark warning to Americans after a deadly federal immigration incident in Minnesota—saying the country is being pushed toward dangerous political chaos.
Greene spoke out following the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti, an intensive care nurse and U.S. citizen, who was killed during a federal immigration enforcement operation in Minneapolis over the weekend. The shooting marked the second fatal encounter involving a federal immigration officer in the city this month, raising serious national concerns.
Earlier in January, another Minnesota resident, Renee Nicole Good, was also killed during a separate enforcement action involving federal immigration authorities.
“Take Off the Political Blinders”
In a widely shared post on X, Greene urged Americans on both the left and right to step back and re-examine what is happening across the country.
“Both sides need to take off their political blinders,” Greene wrote, warning that escalating rhetoric and selective outrage are creating real-world consequences.
Greene, who left Congress earlier this month, did not mention Pretti by name. However, her comments clearly referenced the growing backlash surrounding federal immigration enforcement and the public response to recent shootings.
Conflicting Accounts Fuel Public Anger
According to the Department of Homeland Security, Pretti was armed and resisted officers’ attempts to disarm him. That account has been disputed by eyewitnesses and Pretti’s family, who insist he was filming officers and posed no immediate threat.
The incident has sparked protests in multiple cities and renewed scrutiny of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, particularly over how enforcement actions are conducted in American communities.
As of publication, the Department of Homeland Security has not issued a detailed public response. News outlets reported reaching out to DHS for comment outside normal business hours.
Greene Defends the Constitution—All of It
Greene made clear that her long-standing conservative positions remain unchanged.
She reaffirmed her support for strong border security, the deportation of criminal illegal aliens, and backing law enforcement officers who put their lives on the line. At the same time, she stressed that constitutional rights cannot be selectively ignored.
“Legally carrying a firearm is not the same as threatening someone,” Greene said, referencing Second Amendment protections.
She also emphasized First Amendment rights, including peaceful protest and recording public officials, as well as Fourth Amendment protections against unreasonable searches.
“There is nothing wrong with peacefully protesting or lawfully filming,” Greene added.
A Warning to MAGA Supporters
In one of her most striking statements, Greene urged supporters of the Make America Great Again movement to consider how they would react if roles were reversed.
She pointed to the outrage many conservatives felt when individuals connected to the January 6 Capitol events were arrested under the Biden administration.
Greene asked whether that same outrage would exist if a MAGA supporter were shot while observing and recording a law enforcement action.
“People are being driven into opposing corners,” Greene warned. “None of this solves our real problems—and tragically, people are dying.”
Law Enforcement and Political Fallout
Border Patrol Chief Gregory Bovino defended federal agents, saying officers nationwide are facing increasing threats and violence.
Meanwhile, Democratic officials escalated their rhetoric. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani accused ICE of endangering communities, while Colorado Senator John Hickenlooper called for federal immigration agents to be removed from local neighborhoods altogether.
President Donald Trump responded forcefully, placing blame on Democratic leadership in Minnesota.
In a Truth Social post, Trump questioned why local police were not allowed to assist federal officers and accused Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey of inflaming tensions with what he described as reckless and dangerous rhetoric.
Investigation Ongoing
Minnesota officials have confirmed that an investigation into Pretti’s death is ongoing.
A special election to fill Greene’s former congressional seat is scheduled for March 10, though her comments are already resonating far beyond her former district.
As political divisions deepen and enforcement actions face mounting scrutiny, Greene’s warning underscores a growing fear shared by many Americans—that rising political hostility is pushing the nation toward a breaking point.
