New Republican Announces 2028 Presidential Run?

A prominent name in Republican circles is beginning to generate buzz about a possible 2028 presidential run.

Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.), a respected voice among conservative voters and a 30-year Air Force veteran, has signaled he may seek higher office — and he’s not ruling out a White House bid.

In an exclusive interview with NBC News, Bacon was asked whether he sees himself as a future governor or even president. His response? A simple but telling: “Yes.”

“I want to serve in a way that makes a real impact,” Bacon explained. “I’m not interested in being stuck in constant re-election campaigns every two years. If the right opportunity arises, I’ll consider it.”

Bacon recently announced he won’t run for re-election to Congress in 2026, leaving behind a swing district that leaned left in the last cycle. Despite being in a district that voted for Kamala Harris over President Donald Trump, Bacon managed to hold his seat — a testament to his appeal among independents and moderate conservatives.

Strong Defense Credentials, Reagan-Era Principles

Bacon, 61, built his political reputation on national defense, military readiness, and a strong foreign policy. He’s one of the few in Congress who still proudly identifies with Reagan-style conservatism and a hawkish approach to global threats.

“I don’t pretend running for president would be easy — especially from the House,” he said. “But I believe in this country, and I have a vision to help lead it forward.”

He’s also expressed openness to a Cabinet position under a future Republican president, specifically as Secretary of Defense. “If God opens that door, I’d walk through it,” Bacon said, though he acknowledged the political realities of such an appointment.

No Plans to Challenge a Republican Ally

While Bacon is looking ahead, he made clear he won’t be challenging Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen (R), a longtime friend and political ally. “I won’t run against Jim. That’s not on the table,” he told reporters.

What’s Next for Bacon?

With Congress in the rearview mirror after this term, Bacon isn’t stepping away from public life — just shifting his sights to bigger things. Whether it’s a gubernatorial run or a bid for the presidency in 2028, one thing is certain: Rep. Don Bacon is keeping his options wide open — and conservatives are taking notice.

Stay tuned — the race for 2028 may already be starting.
