Is Newsom trying to weasel his way into the White House?

California Governor Gavin Newsom is scheduled to visit Washington, D.C. on Wednesday to participate in a gathering convened by President Biden, aimed at rallying Democratic governors amidst mounting concerns following Biden’s lackluster performance in the recent debate with former President Trump.

A spokesperson for Governor Newsom confirmed late Tuesday that he would attend the White House meeting, emphasizing his solidarity with President Biden. Biden, the oldest president in U.S. history at 81, is navigating a challenging phase in his reelection campaign, exacerbated by criticisms of his hesitant delivery and disjointed responses during the debate. This has triggered anxiety within the Democratic Party, prompting calls from commentators, editorial boards, and donors for Biden to consider stepping aside as the 2024 Democratic nominee. Over the past day, a small but growing faction of elected Democrats has echoed these sentiments.

Wednesday’s meeting at the White House, which will also include Democratic congressional leaders, follows a conference call among Democratic governors earlier in the week to address fallout from the debate. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, chair of the Democratic Governors Association (DGA), organized the call, reportedly with awareness from the Biden campaign.

While some governors have acknowledged Biden’s debate performance as shaky, they remain steadfast in their support for his candidacy. Governor Newsom, a prominent surrogate for Biden, reaffirmed his loyalty, asserting, “I will never turn my back on President Biden.” He dismissed concerns about Biden’s fitness for office, stating unequivocally, “I have no trepidation.”

In the aftermath of the debate, Governor Newsom has continued to advocate for President Biden, actively fundraising for his campaign and the Democratic National Committee. He has also brushed off speculation about potentially replacing Biden on the ticket, a scenario some have considered despite its improbability.

Joining Newsom at Wednesday’s meeting are fellow Biden surrogates Governors Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan and JB Pritzker of Illinois, both of whom have similarly expressed support for Biden despite acknowledging the debate’s impact on public perception. Pritzker affirmed, “He’s our nominee,” underscoring his commitment to Biden unless the president decides otherwise.

The meeting underscores Biden’s efforts to shore up support among key Democratic allies as he navigates a critical juncture in his bid for a second term, seeking to quell doubts within his party amid ongoing scrutiny of his campaign’s trajectory.
