What is Senate thinking?
As America faces a potential government shutdown, Senate Democrats blocked a Republican-backed funding bill late Friday night — a crushing blow to President Donald Trump’s efforts to stabilize Washington and protect American taxpayers.
The bill had easily passed the House, but in the Senate, it collapsed in a 44-48 vote. Only one Democrat, Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.), crossed party lines to support the GOP. In a surprising twist, Republican Sens. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) and Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) voted against their own party, sealing the bill’s defeat.
This gridlock comes as lawmakers prepare to leave Washington for the Jewish New Year holiday, giving Congress only two working days to prevent a catastrophic government shutdown before the September 30 deadline.
Thune: Democrats Playing Dangerous Political Games
Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) didn’t hold back, accusing Democrats of playing politics with the American people’s livelihoods.
“The House acted. The president is ready to sign this bill,” Thune declared. “Democrats need to take ‘yes’ for an answer so we can keep the government open, protect taxpayers, and maintain national security.”
The Republican continuing resolution (CR) would have kept the government funded until November 21, providing critical time to negotiate long-term spending bills. It also included millions of dollars in new security funding to protect lawmakers, judges, and federal officials amid a historic rise in political violence.
Schumer’s Radical Left-Wing Demands
Democrats didn’t block the bill because of what it included — but because of what it didn’t. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) demanded a wish list of far-left policies, using the looming shutdown as leverage.
Schumer’s counterproposal included:
- Permanent Obamacare pandemic subsidies, a move that would lock in costly entitlements for decades.
- Repeal of Medicaid cost-cutting measures from President Trump’s signature health care reforms.
- Restoration of funding for NPR and PBS, funneling taxpayer dollars to liberal media outlets.
Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) sounded the alarm, calling it a Trojan horse for the radical left.
“Schumer has to play to the far-left fringe that’s actually running the Democrat Party right now,” Barrasso warned in an exclusive interview.
Republicans Fight to Stop a Shutdown
Democrats admit their top priority is rushing to lock in Obamacare subsidies before October 1, when insurance companies send out new rate notices.
Sen. Gary Peters (D-Mich.) confirmed to Fox News Digital:
“All the [insurance rate] notices go out Oct. 1, so you have to have it now.”
Republicans, however, argue that including massive, unrelated spending in a short-term bill is reckless and would balloon the national debt.
“These issues can be addressed after we avert a shutdown,” Thune emphasized.
Schumer Blames Trump While Refusing to Negotiate
Instead of working with Republicans, Schumer accused Trump of causing the standoff, claiming the president told GOP leaders not to negotiate.
Thune strongly pushed back, noting that Schumer’s office is less than 25 yards away from his own and yet the Democrat leader refuses to engage.
Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) urged both leaders to step up, saying:
“If they don’t, then they get what they get. The American people deserve better.”
What’s Really at Stake
- Government Shutdown: Without action, federal employees could be furloughed, Social Security services delayed, and national security impacted.
- Obamacare Expansion: Democrats want to lock in costly subsidies forever, a move Republicans warn will cripple the health care system.
- Liberal Media Bailouts: NPR and PBS could once again be funded by taxpayers.
- Political Control: This fight isn’t just about funding — it’s about who controls America’s future.
The Clock Is Ticking
With just days to go, the showdown in Washington has become a test of wills between President Trump’s America First agenda and Chuck Schumer’s radical leftist demands.
If Democrats refuse to compromise, millions of hardworking Americans could suffer as the government grinds to a halt — all because the left insists on playing political games.
President Trump and Senate Republicans are ready to act. The question is: Will Democrats choose America first, or their radical agenda?
