Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith recently showed his support for a proposal from Florida Governor Ron DeSantis aimed at eliminating property taxes. The proposal, which has gained traction among conservatives, is centered around relieving homeowners, particularly seniors and those on fixed incomes, from the burden of paying yearly property taxes.
Governor DeSantis has long been a strong advocate for reducing government spending and increasing efficiency. His proposal includes creating a task force similar to the Department of Government Efficiency, which would look at ways to cut spending across Florida. A major part of his plan is to address the financial strain property taxes place on homeowners. DeSantis described the system as one where individuals, simply for owning land, must pay the government every year—essentially paying rent to the government just to live on their own property.
“The current system is unfair and unsustainable,” DeSantis explained. “While homestead exemptions provide some relief, many are still struggling with rising property taxes, especially seniors on fixed incomes. It’s time for a change.”
This proposal has found support not just among lawmakers but also among high-profile figures, like Geno Smith. The Seahawks quarterback, who is set to stay with the team until 2025, has earned millions throughout his career. By posting a simple emoji on X (formerly Twitter), Smith indicated his agreement with DeSantis’ stance on this issue.
DeSantis has also voiced support for putting a constitutional amendment on the ballot to eliminate or reform property taxes in Florida. “Property taxes are a regressive and ineffective form of taxation,” he said, pushing for a bold solution that would require voter approval but would ultimately provide long-term relief for homeowners.
This proposal aligns with conservative principles that advocate for lower taxes, reduced government interference, and greater financial freedom for individuals and families. Many Republicans see it as a necessary step toward protecting citizens’ rights and ensuring that government does not overreach into personal property ownership.
