The progressive wing of the Democratic Party scored another major victory Tuesday after Michigan state Rep. Donavan McKinney defeated incumbent Democratic Rep. Shri Thanedar in a closely watched primary election. The result marks another win for the movement aligned with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Sen. Bernie Sanders, and other prominent progressive leaders.
Thanedar’s defeat makes him the eighth sitting House Democrat to lose a primary election this cycle, highlighting the growing divide between establishment Democrats and the party’s increasingly influential progressive activists.
With Michigan’s 13th Congressional District considered safely Democratic, McKinney is expected to be the heavy favorite heading into November’s general election.
Progressive Democrats Continue Building Power
McKinney’s victory is being viewed as another sign that progressive organizations continue expanding their influence inside the Democratic Party.
The Michigan lawmaker received support from several high-profile figures on the left, including Rep. Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and independent Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont. His campaign was also backed by Justice Democrats, the political organization that helped elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and several other members of the congressional “Squad.”
While House Democratic leadership stood behind Thanedar, grassroots activists largely rallied around McKinney, giving him a significant advantage in a one-on-one race.

Thanedar entered Congress after building a successful business career.
He founded an Ann Arbor-based chemical testing company that helped him accumulate a multimillion-dollar fortune before entering politics.
However, critics revived past controversies involving a former New Jersey business facility where reports indicated approximately 170 dogs and dozens of monkeys were left behind after the company shut down. The issue has followed Thanedar throughout much of his political career.
Before winning a congressional seat, Thanedar unsuccessfully sought the Democratic nomination for Michigan governor in 2018, losing to Gretchen Whitmer.
He later won election to Congress but also faced criticism over taxpayer-funded billboards promoting his public image.
