Ocasio-Cortez’s influence is clearly growing and Democrats are going in a wild direction.
Washington, D.C. is now facing another hard-left shake-up as Democratic Socialist Council member Janeese Lewis George officially jumps into the mayoral race.
Her announcement confirms what many conservatives have already warned: the far-left is preparing its next big push in America’s capital, following the same blueprint used by New York City radical Zohran Mamdani and the activist wing of the Democratic Party.
Lewis George, 37, is running to replace outgoing Mayor Muriel Bowser, who recently revealed she will not seek a fourth term. And in true far-left fashion, Lewis George launched her campaign with a video packed full of progressive talking points, emotional appeals, and the same class-war rhetoric championed by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the Democratic Socialist movement.
She claims that “rent is rising” and that everyday residents are “feeling the squeeze,” while accusing businesses and leaders of “raking in profits.” The message is clear: more government control, more progressive policies, and more of the same failed ideology that has driven crime and disorder in major blue cities.
Her launch video even shows federal agents arresting criminals on the street — a strange choice given that Lewis George once openly advocated defunding the police. In 2019, she declared online, “I will absolutely divest from the Metropolitan Police Department.” Only after facing backlash did she walk those comments back during her 2020 campaign.
But her record speaks for itself. Lewis George has been a reliable ally of the Democratic Socialists of America, which endorsed her and celebrated her earlier victory as a win against “big business.” Her new mayoral campaign is reportedly planning to build a 5,000-person volunteer army, target young voters on TikTok, and even bring in strategists from Mamdani’s far-left NYC operation.
Since joining the D.C. Council in 2021, Lewis George has pushed the city in a more radical direction. Meanwhile, real residents have faced rising crime, public safety concerns, and a shrinking middle class. These realities prompted President Trump earlier this year to step in, surge federal law enforcement into the city, and temporarily federalize D.C.’s police department to restore order — actions Lewis George fiercely opposed.
Even Mayor Bowser, who initially criticized Trump’s intervention, later admitted the federal crackdown was working and was bringing crime down in D.C.
Now, voters must decide whether they want a safer, more stable capital city or another AOC-aligned politician who supports policies that have already weakened America’s largest Democrat-run cities.
With Lewis George running on a platform of “standing up to corruption” while promoting the same activist agenda that created D.C.’s problems, many longtime residents — especially seniors, homeowners, and taxpayers — are bracing for what could be one of the most consequential mayoral races in years.
