Pelosi still holds deep hatred for what Donald Trump represents.
Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) harshly criticized former President Trump’s upcoming visit to Capitol Hill on Thursday, accusing him of being on a “mission to dismantle our democracy.”
“Today, the person who instigated an insurrection is returning to the scene of the crime. January 6th was an assault on the Capitol, a day when Nazi and Confederate flags disgracefully flew under the dome constructed by Lincoln,” Pelosi stated in a release shared with The Hill on Thursday.
“It was an attack on the Constitution and the peaceful transfer of power, driven by a desperate attempt to maintain control,” she added. “And it was an attack on Members, heroic police officers, and staff, leading to deaths, injuries, and lasting trauma.”
Trump’s planned visit to the Capitol will be his first since the insurrection on January 6, 2021, when hundreds of his supporters stormed the building in an effort to overturn the 2020 election results and protest President Biden’s victory.
Pelosi, a longstanding adversary of Trump, referenced his previous comments about wielding dictatorial powers, where he suggested he would act as a dictator for a day if re-elected.
“With his vows to be a dictator from day one and to seek vengeance against his political adversaries, Donald Trump arrives at Capitol Hill today with the same goal of undermining our democracy,” Pelosi asserted. “However, let there be no doubt—Trump has already cemented his legacy of disgrace within our sacred halls.”
Pelosi’s remarks were initially reported by Politico Playbook.
The former president is scheduled to be in Washington for a discussion organized by the Business Roundtable and will meet with a group of Senate Republicans for a policy-centric discussion in preparation for the November election.
Additionally, he will address the House Republican Conference to discuss strategies for expanding the House Republican majority and outline the legislative agenda for 2025, according to a spokesperson for Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), who spoke with The Hill.
Throughout her time as Speaker, Pelosi has consistently warned about the potential dangers of a second Trump term, given her highly contentious relationship with the former president. Under her leadership, the House impeached Trump twice and initiated an investigation into the January 6 attack, with Pelosi appointing the members for the investigative committee.
