On Thursday, Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.) performed the Heimlich maneuver on Senator Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) during the Senate GOP’s lunch after she experienced a choking incident with her meal.
Expressing her gratitude on X, Ernst thanked Paul for his timely intervention. She humorously linked the incident to her disapproval of the Democrats’ policies, stating, “Can’t help but choke on the woke policies Dems are forcing down our throats. Thanks, Dr. @RandPaul!” referring to a Politico post.
Senator Ernst was the host of the weekly Thursday luncheon, a tradition where a member provides a meal often featuring delicacies from their home state. Senator Chuck Grassley (R) from Iowa had previously shared details about the meal, highlighting pork chops from the Hawkeye State.
Despite past disagreements with Senator Paul on foreign policy, Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) jokingly remarked to The Washington Post after the incident, “God bless Rand Paul.” He added, “I never thought I’d say that.”
