Republican Senator Won’t Run Again After Betraying President Trump’s Agenda

Tillis Turns on Trump—Then Quits

In a stunning move, North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis announced he won’t seek re-election in 2026—just days after voting against President Donald Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act.

The bill, a centerpiece of Trump’s America First legislative agenda, aims to restore border security, extend tax cuts, cut wasteful spending, and put America’s energy independence back on track.

Tillis sided with Democrats, objecting to the bill’s Medicaid reforms—a decision that enraged GOP voters and drew sharp backlash from conservatives across the country.

“This Wasn’t a Hard Decision,” Tillis Says

In his Sunday statement, Tillis claimed:

“Leaders who embrace bipartisanship and compromise are becoming an endangered species.”

But for many Republican voters, his words rang hollow. Tillis has long been viewed as out of step with the conservative base, and talk of a primary challenge had already been growing.

By stepping down, some say he’s simply avoiding the embarrassment of a Trump-backed challenger routing him at the ballot box.

Lara Trump May Enter the Race

With Tillis out, speculation has exploded that Lara Trump—the President’s daughter-in-law and a Wilmington native—may run for the open seat.

A source close to the Trump family told NBC:

“She’s strongly considering jumping in… The race will be over before it begins.”

Lara Trump, a former RNC co-chair, is widely popular among North Carolina conservatives and would instantly become the frontrunner. She previously passed on a Senate bid in 2022, but the political landscape has shifted dramatically.

RNC Chair Michael Whatley, a loyal Trump supporter and former head of the North Carolina Republican Party, is also rumored to be eyeing the seat.

With 22 GOP-held Senate seats up for grabs in 2026, securing North Carolina will be key to holding the majority—and President Trump is expected to play a central role in shaping the field.

North Carolina Remains a MAGA Stronghold

Trump carried the state in 2024, but Republicans suffered a blow in the governor’s race after former Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson was embroiled in controversy over explicit online content.

Still, the Tar Heel State remains a must-win battleground, and a Trump-endorsed candidate could energize the base like never before.

Tillis Lashes Out on the Way Out

In his farewell, Tillis pointed fingers at “raw politics” and “partisan gridlock,” referencing the recent exits of Sens. Kyrsten Sinema and Joe Manchin.

“Too many elected officials are motivated by pure politics… They don’t give a damn about the people they promised to represent,” he wrote.

But voters aren’t buying it. For many conservatives, his record tells the real story: crossing the aisle, supporting amnesty, and now blocking the president’s bill.

A Win for the Grassroots?

Conservatives see Tillis’ exit as a victory for the America First movement—and a chance to elect someone who will fight for real border security, real tax relief, and real conservative values.

With Lara Trump waiting in the wings, the battle for North Carolina’s Senate seat is about to heat up.
