House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., has sharply criticized Vice President Kamala Harris for allegedly supporting a scenario where the future of American elections could be influenced by individuals who are in the country illegally.
During a recent visit to the southern border in San Ysidro, California—an area Johnson described as the “epicenter of the Biden-Harris border crisis”—he voiced serious concerns about the impact of illegal immigration on the integrity of future elections. Johnson warned that if even a small fraction of the estimated 16 million illegal immigrants who have entered the country under President Biden’s administration were to cast ballots, it could jeopardize the credibility of the electoral process.
“We’ve observed firsthand the chaos that has unfolded here in the San Diego sector, which has unfortunately become a symbol of the Biden-Harris administration’s border failures,” Johnson remarked during a press conference at a location known as “Whiskey 8.” He emphasized that Congress is increasingly worried that this unchecked influx of illegal immigrants poses a direct threat to the integrity of U.S. elections.
Johnson, joined by Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., was advocating for the SAVE Act, a proposed piece of legislation designed to update voter-registration requirements from the early 1990s. The act aims to address concerns that noncitizens might be able to register and vote due to insufficient verification measures.
“If individuals apply for public benefits, they often encounter a brief form asking if they wish to register to vote,” Johnson explained. “All one has to do is check a box affirming citizenship and the request to be registered. There’s no verification required, and we believe this is unacceptable.”
Johnson contended that the SAVE Act would close these gaps and prevent potential abuse. He criticized Harris and 198 House Democrats for allegedly supporting policies that might allow illegal immigrants to impact U.S. elections. Johnson argued that the current system, relying on an honor system for citizenship verification, is inadequate.
With illegal migrant encounters projected to reach 10 million by October—and Johnson’s belief that the true number might be as high as 16 million—he warned that if even a small percentage were to register and vote, it could alter the outcome of congressional and presidential races.
“Only American citizens should have a say in American elections,” Johnson asserted. “Yet, it appears that President Biden and the Democrats, under the direction of Vice President Kamala Harris, are disregarding this principle, contributing to the ongoing border crisis and compromising the electoral system.”
