This is just insane.
Rep. Ayanna Pressley, a progressive Democrat from Massachusetts and a member of “The Squad,” recently delivered a fiery critique of House Republicans over a new bill aimed at dismantling diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives within the federal government. During a House Oversight Committee hearing, Pressley accused GOP lawmakers of ignoring the history of racial inequality in America and undermining efforts to rectify ongoing injustices.
The bill in question, introduced by Rep. Michael Cloud of Texas, is titled the “Dismantle DEI Act.” It seeks to eliminate DEI offices in federal agencies, remove DEI-related requirements for government contractors, and ensure taxpayer dollars are not spent on race-based policies. In making his case for the bill, Rep. Cloud argued that DEI initiatives undermine the progress made over generations in fighting discrimination. He pointed to historical milestones, from the abolition of slavery to the civil rights movement, and claimed that these efforts should be enough to address past racial wrongs.
However, Pressley was quick to take issue with the bill, denouncing it as a denial of the country’s history of racism. “This bill, titled The Dismantling DEI Act, is an utter disgrace,” she declared. Pressley accused Republicans of disregarding the reality of racial inequality and of using bills like this one to block progress. “We are talking about legislation that refutes the sky is blue, water is wet, and racism is a real thing,” she said, highlighting what she saw as contradictions within the bill. “In one section, it bans anything that acknowledges racism, but in another, it discusses racism as an ongoing issue.”
Pressley went on to challenge her GOP colleagues’ knowledge of American history, listing examples of systemic racism, including the Three-Fifths Compromise, the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II, and the history of redlining. She argued that such policies have had lasting effects on the Black community, contributing to the racial wealth gap.
Pressley also took issue with the invocation of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s name by some Republicans. She warned that they were distorting his legacy, saying, “Please keep Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s name out of your mouths. You’ve perverted his words and his mission.” She emphasized that King was a champion for racial justice, equality, and the rights of marginalized communities—a message, she argued, that Republicans are misrepresenting for their own political gain.
Rep. Jasmine Crockett, another Democrat from Texas, also weighed in, criticizing the GOP for equating DEI programs with oppression. “There has been no oppression for the White man in this country,” she argued. Crockett highlighted the brutal history of slavery and the mistreatment of Black people as a contrast to the claims of oppression often made by Republicans. “You tell me which White men were dragged out of their homes, who were taken across an ocean and forced into slavery. That is oppression,” she said.
While the bill passed the House Oversight Committee by a vote of 23-17, the sharp divide over the issue underscores the ongoing cultural and political battle over how America addresses its history of racial inequality. For Republicans, the focus is on limiting government intervention in racial matters, while Democrats like Pressley argue that such measures only serve to erase or downplay the injustices that continue to affect minority communities today.
