Is Romney praising Trump to get back in his good graces?

Senator Mitt Romney, a Utah Republican known for his criticism of former President Donald Trump, recently praised Pam Bondi after she was nominated for U.S. Attorney General by the president-elect. Romney, who has been a staunch critic of Trump and was the only Republican senator to vote for his impeachment twice, commended Bondi as a “highly capable leader” and acknowledged her successful tenure as Florida’s Attorney General from 2011 to 2019. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Romney described Bondi’s leadership in Florida as “excellent,” highlighting her record in the state’s legal affairs.

Bondi’s nomination comes shortly after former U.S. Representative Matt Gaetz, another Florida Republican, withdrew his name from consideration for the Attorney General position. Gaetz had been nominated by Trump the previous week but faced scrutiny over past allegations of sexual misconduct and involvement in a sex trafficking investigation. Gaetz resigned from his congressional seat to pursue the nomination, but ultimately decided to step aside, citing concerns that his confirmation would become a distraction.

Bondi, a strong ally of Trump, had previously served as one of his defense attorneys during his first impeachment trial. She played a key role in defending Trump against accusations that he had abused his power by withholding military aid to Ukraine in exchange for political favors. Despite Romney’s vocal opposition to Trump during both impeachment trials, he has supported Bondi, who has longstanding ties to the Republican establishment.

Romney and Bondi have shared a professional relationship dating back to 2012 when she endorsed Romney’s presidential bid and spoke at the Republican National Convention. Although Romney’s views on Trump remain divisive within the party, his praise for Bondi reflects his continued support for qualified leaders within the Republican ranks, even if their political affiliations differ from his own.

While Romney has distanced himself from Trump in recent years, he has consistently advocated for a strong, principled Republican Party. His decision to publicly support Bondi underscores the importance of experience and competence in key government positions, regardless of personal politics.
