Trump is in charge, again!
On Friday, President Donald Trump announced that he was taking action to reshape the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., firing most of the current board of trustees and taking the helm as the new chairman. Through a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump declared, “We are going to make the Kennedy Center GREAT AGAIN.” He stated that the individuals he was removing, including the chairman, failed to share his vision for a “Golden Age in Arts and Culture” in America.
The Kennedy Center, an iconic institution that honors the performing arts, responded, acknowledging Trump’s statement but emphasized that they had not yet received any official communications from the White House regarding changes to the board. David M. Rubenstein, the current chairman, was originally appointed to the board by President George W. Bush in 2010, and has been reappointed by both Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden. Rubenstein had planned to retire in 2025 but extended his tenure after Trump’s victory in 2016.
Trump’s decision to overhaul the board comes as a response to what he perceives as a lack of alignment with his vision for a more patriotic and values-driven cultural agenda. The current board members include figures tied to both Democratic and Republican administrations, such as Karine Jean-Pierre (Biden’s White House Press Secretary), former Obama adviser Stephanie Cutter, and Trump’s own ally, Pam Bondi, the newly appointed Attorney General.
One of Trump’s key promises is to take the Kennedy Center in a new direction by canceling performances he deems inappropriate, such as drag shows. “Last year alone, the Kennedy Center held Drag Shows targeting America’s youth—THIS IS GOING TO STOP,” he wrote. This stands as a stark contrast to the institution’s previous programming, including a “Drag Brunch” and “A Drag Salute to Divas” events. Trump is adamant about ensuring the arts reflect the values of the nation and promises to steer the cultural center towards a more traditional path.
The announcement, however, has sparked controversy. Critics have raised questions about the legality of Trump’s actions, wondering whether the president has the authority to fire the board members and appoint himself as chairman. Some also question the impact of such a dramatic shake-up on the institution’s future.
The Kennedy Center, which was opened in 1971 under President Nixon to honor the legacy of President John F. Kennedy, has long served as a cornerstone of American culture. Known for its performances across multiple disciplines, the center’s annual Kennedy Center Honors have been a tradition where presidents and first families have celebrated major contributions to the arts. However, during Trump’s first term, he and Melania were notably absent from the ceremony, partly due to a backlash from artists who protested his administration’s policies.
Despite the pushback, Trump remains firm in his vision for the Kennedy Center, vowing that under his leadership, the institution will once again reflect the best of America’s artistic talents. As he prepares to announce a new board, Trump’s message is clear: the Kennedy Center will embody the values of conservative America and reject the progressive agenda that he believes has tarnished its legacy. For Trump and his supporters, this is just the beginning of a broader movement to bring cultural institutions in line with patriotic American values.
