A group of 40 House Democrats have just put forward new legislation to bar former President Donald Trump from the presidency in 2024 via the 14th Amendment.
According to The Hill, the group with which is lead by Democrat Rep. David Cicilline claims that Section 3 of the amendment says that Trump engaged in “insurrection or rebellion” and should be prevented from holding office.
Cicilline later added that Trump “very clearly” engaged in an insurrection on Jan. 6, 2021, and tried to overturn the 2020 presidential election.
“You don’t get to lead a government you tried to destroy,” Cicilline stated.
The group of 40 House Democrats are claiming that Trump encouraged the violence on Jan. 6th and attempted to intimidate state and federal officials.
“The 14th Amendment makes clear that based on his past behavior, Donald Trump is disqualified from ever holding federal office again and, under Section 5, Congress has the power to pass legislation to implement this prohibition,” Cicilline stated.
