Trump Defunds The U.S. Treasury?

Here’s what the Trump team is saying now.

Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk recently revealed a set of straightforward reforms that his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) intends to implement at the U.S. Treasury Department, a move that could drastically improve transparency and accountability within the government’s financial operations.

According to Musk, one of the primary goals of the Treasury overhaul is simplifying the auditing process of the government’s books. By making the financial system more transparent, Musk believes the public can better track where taxpayer dollars are going. Additionally, these changes include ensuring that Treasury officials update the “do not pay” list more frequently. This list identifies fraudsters and illegal entities attempting to siphon funds from government programs.

Musk has been vocal about the past inefficiencies in the Treasury, noting that many of the department’s issues stemmed from a lack of concern among leadership. “The previous management didn’t care enough about fraud or efficiency,” Musk stated. He pointed out that Treasury employees have long advocated for these reforms, but have been hindered by leadership resistant to change.

In addition to reforming the audit process, Musk emphasized that a significant portion of government entitlement payments are made without verifying proper identification, including over $100 billion in annual payments to individuals who either lack a Social Security Number or even a temporary ID. Musk’s assessment of the situation suggests that about half of these payments could be fraudulent, representing a staggering $50 billion in taxpayer dollars lost to fraud every year. He called this “completely insane” and demanded that the Treasury take immediate action to address it.

Musk’s comments come after a federal judge blocked DOGE’s access to the Treasury’s systems, a ruling Musk condemned as “insane.” The lawsuit, filed by 19 Democratic state attorneys general, argued that Musk’s team had been given improper access to sensitive information. Despite these legal hurdles, Musk continues to push for reform, asserting that the U.S. government does not have a revenue problem but rather a spending problem.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has expressed support for Musk’s efforts, recognizing that while the system processes over 1.3 billion payments annually, there is significant room for improvement in accountability, accuracy, and traceability. The push for reform in the Treasury highlights a broader desire for a more efficient, transparent, and accountable government that puts taxpayers first.
