Schiff Begs Trump For Help

Here’s what happened.

Senator Adam Schiff of California has raised concerns about the negative impact of President Donald Trump’s executive order on federal hiring, specifically as it affects seasonal firefighters. In a letter to the Department of Agriculture, the Department of the Interior, and the Office of Management and Budget, Schiff argued that the hiring freeze, implemented on January 20, has delayed the recruitment of thousands of seasonal wildland firefighters, potentially jeopardizing the nation’s ability to respond effectively to catastrophic wildfires.

Schiff pointed out that the executive order, which paused federal hiring across various agencies, contains an exemption for positions related to public safety. However, he believes that the delay in onboarding seasonal firefighters contradicts this exemption. “Our communities depend on the dedicated work of over 15,000 seasonal federal wildland firefighters each year,” Schiff stated, emphasizing their vital role in protecting fire-prone regions.

California has seen severe devastation from wildfires, particularly in Southern California, where last month’s fires resulted in nearly 30 deaths and the destruction of over 16,000 structures. Many of the federal firefighters who assisted in these fires were subject to the hiring freeze, despite the fact that they play a crucial role in public safety during fire emergencies.

Schiff is calling for answers on why the hiring freeze continues to block the recruitment of essential firefighting personnel and how it affects the overall readiness of federal firefighting teams. He also raised concerns about the possibility of early retirements due to staffing challenges. In his letter, Schiff warned that the ongoing delay in hiring federal firefighters could further weaken California’s firefighting capacity, endangering the lives of its residents.

He concluded by requesting additional information about how the hiring freeze impacts the recruitment process, the number of resignations, and the role of the Department of Government Efficiency, led by Elon Musk, in the hiring and preparedness of federal wildland firefighters. For the safety of millions of Americans, Schiff urged federal agencies to prioritize the swift onboarding of essential personnel.
