Who would have expected this?

Former President Donald Trump addressed supporters in Michigan on Tuesday, reflecting on the recent assassination attempt against him. He shared that both President Biden and Vice President Harris reached out with “very nice” phone calls following the alarming incident, a gesture that left him in a unique position regarding his criticism of them.

During the town hall, Trump remarked on his conversation with Biden, saying, “He was very nice to me yesterday. In a way, I almost wish the call hadn’t happened, because he was so gracious. He expressed his condolences and concern.” Trump also noted that Harris’s call was equally cordial, stating, “She couldn’t have been nicer,” which prompted some discontent from the crowd. “I know you don’t want to hear that, but it was indeed very nice,” he added as attendees booed in response.

The context for these calls comes after a serious incident in which Ryan Wesley Routh was charged with gun-related offenses after allegedly threatening Trump at his West Palm Beach golf course. The situation escalated to the point where a Secret Service agent felt compelled to intervene.

Trump seized on the opportunity to criticize Biden and Harris, linking their rhetoric to the violence directed at him. He asserted that both leaders have, in his view, perpetuated a hostile political environment, claiming, “Biden is the worst president in history, and Harris has been a disaster.” He described Harris as a Marxist who poses a threat to American values.

While Biden and Harris have characterized Trump as a danger to democracy, they also condemned the recent violence and stressed the importance of civility in political discourse. Trump’s supporters, however, remain focused on rallying around their leader, underscoring the deep divisions in today’s political landscape.
