President Donald Trump is making headlines once again — this time with a move that has the entire sports world talking.
According to ESPN, the Washington Commanders’ brand-new multi-billion-dollar stadium in the nation’s capital could soon bear his name.
The report broke just one day after the White House announced that President Trump will attend Sunday’s Commanders game against the Detroit Lions to honor America’s military heroes during a special halftime tribute.
While the White House hasn’t officially confirmed the naming plans, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt hinted that it would be a well-deserved honor.
“That would surely be a beautiful name,” she said, “as it was President Trump who made the rebuilding of the new stadium possible.”
The state-of-the-art domed stadium, expected to rise where the historic RFK Stadium once stood, will cost an estimated $3.7 billion. ESPN reports that “back-channel communications” have already taken place between the Trump administration and team owner Josh Harris.
“It’s what the President wants — and it will probably happen,” one insider reportedly told ESPN.
Trump’s Stand for Tradition
This news comes after months of debate over the Commanders’ name. Earlier this year, President Trump took a firm stand, threatening to block the stadium deal unless the team restored its legendary “Washington Redskins” name.
“If they don’t bring back the Redskins and get rid of that ridiculous moniker, I won’t approve the deal,” Trump declared on Truth Social. “The team would be far more valuable and exciting for everyone!”
Trump added that America’s Native heritage was being erased in the name of “political correctness.”
“Our great Indian people, in massive numbers, want this to happen,” Trump said. “Their pride and history are being stripped away. We are a country of passion and common sense — OWNERS, GET IT DONE!”
A President Who Puts America First — Even in Sports
When the RFK Stadium redevelopment deal was signed, President Trump, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, and Josh Harris gathered in the Oval Office for the official announcement — a rare show of unity.
Sunday’s matchup will mark President Trump’s first NFL game of the season. He last appeared at the 2025 Super Bowl in New Orleans, when the Philadelphia Eagles triumphed over the Kansas City Chiefs.
In a statement, the Commanders expressed pride in welcoming the 45th President:
“We are honored to welcome President Trump as we celebrate those who have served and continue to serve our nation. The Commanders are proud to take part in the NFL’s ‘Salute to Service’ initiative.”
If finalized, the move would make history — the first time an NFL stadium carries the name of a sitting U.S. President. Supporters are already calling it a “monument to American pride and leadership.”
🇺🇸 Why This Story Matters
For millions of patriotic Americans, this moment is about more than football. It’s about honoring a President who stands up for tradition, for veterans, and for America’s values.
As one supporter posted online: “Finally, something in Washington that truly represents the people — not the politicians.”
