The White House said Tuesday that President Trump is weighing several options, including possible military involvement, as part of an effort to acquire Greenland.
According to the media, Trump views Greenland as a key national security priority because of its strategic importance in the Arctic, where global competition has been increasing. Administration officials said the president and his advisers are actively discussing different approaches and that no options have been taken off the table.
Trump has raised the idea of bringing Greenland under U.S. control before, arguing that Denmark is not able to provide the level of security the territory needs. He has also said the issue is vital for both national and international security, while stopping short of saying military force is likely.
The renewed discussion has sparked concern among U.S. allies in Europe. Several European leaders issued a joint statement saying Greenland belongs to its people and that decisions about its future should be made by Denmark and Greenland alone.
