Here’s what conservatives need to know.
As President Donald Trump settles back into office, concerns are emerging about the rising cost of everyday goods. According to former economic advisor Stephen Moore, there’s a “troubling” trend developing with prices continuing to climb more than a month into Trump’s second term. This is particularly concerning, as one of Trump’s main campaign promises was to tackle high prices and inflation that surged during the pandemic under the Biden administration.
In the past few years, Americans have faced soaring costs for everything from homes to groceries. The inflation crisis became a significant issue for President Biden, costing Democrats in the midterm elections last November. However, despite the change in leadership, prices remain stubbornly high, and some voters are questioning whether Trump is focusing on the issues that matter most to them. While Trump has been active on cultural matters and workforce cuts, the economic struggles many families face have not been effectively addressed.
Stephen Moore, in an interview with The Wall Street Journal, expressed concern about the ongoing inflationary pressures. He stressed that addressing high prices must remain a top priority for Trump’s administration, especially as the party heads into the 2026 midterm elections. During Trump’s first term, he worked closely with Larry Kudlow on policies like the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which brought temporary economic relief. However, the latest data on the Consumer Price Index (CPI) shows a 0.5% increase in January 2025, surpassing many economists’ expectations.
Egg prices have been a particularly painful reminder of the inflation issue, with costs surging to nearly $5 a dozen. Additionally, concerns about Trump’s tariffs on Canada and Mexico could mean higher prices for imported goods and housing. Although Trump’s policies may take time to affect prices, the political pressure is mounting. A recent poll found that 62% of Americans believe Trump has not done enough to reduce the cost of everyday items, signaling that the economic issue could become a bigger problem for him if left unaddressed.
In the coming months, inflation and pricing will be key issues for voters. Governor Brian Kemp of Georgia warned that while Trump isn’t facing backlash over prices yet, it could become a risk as time passes. As Trump’s administration moves forward, the pressure to deliver on promises of economic recovery and price reduction will grow, especially with upcoming data releases on inflation. If the cost of living remains high, it could have serious consequences for Republican prospects in future elections.
