Trump Loses To Harvard

Here’s what conservatives need to know.

In a stunning courtroom defeat for President Donald Trump, a federal judge has ordered the immediate restoration of $2.2 billion in federal funding to Harvard University — even while admitting the Ivy League school has been “plagued by antisemitism” for years.

The ruling, issued Wednesday by Judge Allison Burroughs, an Obama-appointed judge, blocks Trump’s effort to hold Harvard accountable for failing to protect Jewish students and faculty.

Burroughs acknowledged Harvard’s serious problems but claimed the Trump administration acted unlawfully by cutting off taxpayer money, accusing the White House of engaging in a “targeted, ideologically motivated assault” on elite universities.

“Harvard’s decision to speak out and fight is indisputably protected by the First Amendment,” Burroughs wrote in her 84-page ruling.

Trump Cracks Down on Campus Antisemitism

Earlier this year, President Trump froze Harvard’s federal research funding, citing evidence that the university was pushing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs while failing to combat rising antisemitism on campus. The freeze escalated into a full termination of funding, part of Trump’s broader effort to hold liberal universities accountable.

White House spokeswoman Liz Huston slammed the ruling as judicial activism and vowed an immediate appeal.

“To any fair-minded American, it’s clear Harvard failed to protect its students from harassment and discrimination,” Huston said.
“Harvard has no constitutional right to taxpayer dollars.”

Huston also accused Judge Burroughs of playing politics, calling her an “activist Obama judge” who undermined Trump’s fight to protect Jewish students and root out campus hate.

Trump’s Broader Campaign Against Woke Universities

Harvard isn’t the only institution facing Trump’s crackdown. Earlier this year, the administration struck landmark settlements with two other elite universities:

  • Columbia University paid $220 million and agreed to overhaul its policies to regain nearly $1 billion in research funding.
  • Brown University pledged $50 million to local workforce programs, ended DEI initiatives, and promised to keep single-sex sports teams and facilities.

At a White House Cabinet meeting last week, President Trump warned Education Secretary Linda McMahon not to back down in negotiations with Harvard.

“They’ve been very bad,” Trump said.
“Don’t negotiate. Nothing less than $500 million.”

Why This Matters

This legal showdown is more than just a fight over funding. It’s part of Trump’s larger battle to stop taxpayer money from flowing to liberal universities that, critics say, have become breeding grounds for left-wing ideology and campus intolerance.

The judge’s decision means Harvard will continue receiving billions in taxpayer dollars, despite widespread outrage over its failure to protect Jewish students and stop campus harassment.

The White House is preparing an emergency appeal, setting up a high-stakes clash that could shape the future of higher education, free speech, and government accountability.
