1,000 New Beds to Hold Illegal Migrants in “Speedway Slammer” Facility
The Trump administration is taking another decisive step to secure America’s borders—this time, with the opening of a major new migrant detention facility in Indiana.
In partnership with Governor Mike Braun, federal immigration officials will gain access to 1,000 additional beds at the Miami Correctional Facility, now dubbed the “Speedway Slammer.” The name pays tribute to Indiana’s proud racing tradition and the nearby Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Noem: “We’re Taking Back Control”
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced the move Tuesday on social media:
“We’re partnering with Indiana to expand detention capacity. Thanks to Governor Braun for helping us remove the worst of the worst from our country.”
She added a warning to those violating U.S. law:
“If you are in this country illegally, you could find yourself behind bars in Indiana’s Speedway Slammer.”
Indiana Joins the Fight to Secure the Border
Governor Mike Braun, a staunch supporter of President Trump, confirmed the state’s full cooperation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
“Indiana is proud to support President Trump’s plan to deport illegal migrants and protect American communities. We’re offering up our facilities, our people, and our resources to make it happen.”
In addition to Miami Correctional Facility, the Grissom Joint Air Reserve Base and Camp Atterbury will also be made available to house deportable migrants.
Funded by Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill”
This new initiative is funded through the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed by President Trump on July 4. The law authorizes spending to create 80,000 new ICE detention beds—a critical tool in halting the illegal immigration surge that has plagued the nation.
Florida’s “Alligator Alcatraz” Already Making an Impact
Indiana follows Florida’s lead, where Governor Ron DeSantis launched the “Alligator Alcatraz” facility deep in the Everglades. Outfitted with temporary housing and a working airfield, the site is already deporting migrants by the hundreds.
That facility, which opened on July 3, is expected to hold up to 4,000 individuals once fully operational.
Trump’s Message: Borders Are Back
President Trump’s renewed immigration enforcement effort is delivering real results. With key red states stepping up, the message is clear: America is reclaiming its sovereignty.
