Washington, D.C. – President Donald Trump has issued a public safety emergency in the nation’s capital, taking direct federal control over the Metropolitan Police Department and ordering 800 National Guard troops into the city in a dramatic move to restore “law, order, and public safety.”
Speaking from the White House alongside Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Attorney General Pam Bondi, Trump vowed this was only the beginning—and five major Democrat-run cities could be next.
“We’re not going to lose our cities,” Trump declared. “Look at Chicago. Look at Los Angeles. New York has a problem. And Baltimore and Oakland—so far gone. We’re not letting this happen.”
Trump Names 5 Cities That Could Face Federal Crackdown
During the press conference, Trump singled out Baltimore, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, and Oakland as potential targets for federal intervention if crime and homelessness are not brought under control.
He said the situation in Washington, D.C. was a warning for other failing cities: “If you can’t protect your citizens, the federal government will.”
Emergency Powers and the Fight Against Crime
Invoking special authority under the District of Columbia’s Home Rule Act, Trump seized command of the capital’s police force, comparing D.C.’s murder rate to some of the most dangerous cities in the world, including Bogotá and Mexico City.
The decision comes after a brutal August 3 attack on Edward “Big Balls” Coristine, a 19-year-old former staffer at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), who was assaulted during an alleged attempted carjacking in Logan Circle.
Democrats Push Back – Trump Doubles Down
Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott claimed his city is “the safest it’s been in over 50 years,” while D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser argued that violent crime has dropped significantly since 2023.
Trump dismissed their remarks as political spin, saying Democrat leaders have “let cities collapse while blaming everyone but themselves.”
Trump’s Plan: Crime Crackdown & Beautification
In addition to deploying the National Guard, Trump announced a “beautification” campaign for D.C., including:
- Clearing homeless encampments
