This is going to cause a major shake up.
WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald Trump announced Sunday that a new round of tariffs targeting imported semiconductors and electronics will be revealed this week, marking a major escalation in the ongoing U.S.-China trade war. Speaking from Air Force One, President Trump made clear his administration’s goal: bring chip manufacturing back to American soil and protect national security from foreign dependence.
“We want to make our chips and semiconductors right here in our country,” Trump told reporters as he returned to Washington from his West Palm Beach estate.
This announcement follows a wave of reciprocal tariffs on Chinese imports, with rates reaching 125% last week, and signals that temporary exclusions for items like smartphones and laptops may soon be lifted. The president emphasized the need for flexibility, while also making it clear that America must stop relying on hostile foreign powers for critical technologies.
A New National Security Strategy for U.S. Technology
Earlier in the day, President Trump launched a national security investigation into the global electronics supply chain, a move designed to address vulnerabilities in U.S. infrastructure.
“We are examining the entire electronics and semiconductor supply chain,” the President posted on social media. “This is about national strength and economic independence.”
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick confirmed that within 60 days, new targeted tariffs will be imposed on key sectors such as semiconductors, smartphones, computers, and pharmaceuticals. These will be in addition to current reciprocal tariffs.
“This isn’t just about trade,” Lutnick stated. “It’s about rebuilding our industrial base, securing our technology, and defending the American way of life.”
China Responds, Wall Street Reacts — But Main Street Stands Behind Trump
China hit back with a fresh round of tariffs on U.S. goods, but Trump’s supporters say it’s long overdue. For decades, China has exploited weak American trade policy. Now, under Trump, Washington is finally fighting back.
While some investors like Bill Ackman and Ray Dalio warned of short-term market volatility, many conservatives argue that short-term pain leads to long-term strength. National security, jobs, and economic independence are worth the fight.
“These tariffs are how we stop selling out our country,” a senior White House adviser said. “We’re going to bring these industries home, where they belong.”
Negotiations with allies including Japan, Israel, and South Korea are underway, but China is not on the invite list. President Trump’s message is clear: America First, no matter what.
