One of Trump’s favorite NFL athletes is facing new legal problems.
New legal trouble involving the father of NFL superstar Patrick Mahomes is once again drawing national attention — just as the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback remains one of the most recognizable faces in professional sports.
Patrick Mahomes Sr. was taken back into custody this week after authorities say he violated the terms of his probation by consuming alcohol. According to multiple reports, he was booked Tuesday into the Smith County Jail in Texas.
Mahomes Sr. is currently serving a five-year probation sentence related to a February 2024 driving-while-intoxicated arrest in Tyler, Texas. At the time of that incident, law enforcement reported his blood alcohol concentration was 0.23 — nearly three times the legal limit. He was formally sentenced later that year, with court documents warning that any probation violation could expose him to up to 10 years in prison.
Police body-camera footage from the 2024 arrest, later obtained by media outlets, shows Mahomes Sr. pleading with officers while handcuffed. In the video, he repeatedly referenced his son, who was preparing to play in the Super Bowl at the time.
“My son is getting ready to play in the Super Bowl,” Mahomes Sr. told officers, acknowledging that he had been drinking while insisting he was not intoxicated. He expressed concern that the arrest could become a distraction for his son and the Kansas City Chiefs during their championship run.
Mahomes Sr. also told officers that the vehicle he was driving had recently been gifted to him and that the registration paperwork had not yet been finalized. He suggested the situation could unnecessarily create a public controversy during a critical moment in his son’s career.
Both father and son later addressed the incident in ESPN’s documentary series The Kingdom, which followed the Chiefs through their Super Bowl season.
Mahomes said the situation became a national talking point at the height of the playoffs, forcing him to answer questions off the field. He explained that the episode ultimately served as a wake-up call for his father.
Mahomes Sr. described the arrest as the most embarrassing experience of his life and said he immediately apologized to his son for drawing attention away from one of the most important moments of his career.
With the latest probation violation now under review, Mahomes Sr. could face significantly tougher consequences if the court determines he failed to comply with sentencing requirements — putting renewed scrutiny on a situation that once again places unwanted headlines around one of the NFL’s biggest stars.
