Trump Wakes Up To ‘Radioactive’ Crisis

This was unexpected.

Federal food safety officials are expanding a nationwide frozen shrimp recall after concerns emerged involving possible radioactive exposure, an issue drawing attention early in President Donald Trump’s new term.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) confirmed that more than 83,000 bags of frozen raw shrimp are now included in an expanded recall after regulators determined the products may have come into contact with Cesium-137, a radioactive substance linked to nuclear materials.

Imported Shrimp Sold Nationwide

According to the FDA, the shrimp was imported from Indonesia and sold across the United States under the Market 32 and Waterfront Bistro brand names.

Major grocery chains that carried the recalled shrimp include:

  • Price Chopper
  • Jewel-Osco
  • Albertsons
  • Safeway
  • Lucky Supermarket

The products were distributed to stores in at least 19 states, including New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Massachusetts, Oregon, Utah, and several others.

How to Identify the Recalled Products

At Price Chopper locations, the shrimp was sold in 1-pound frozen bags, while other retailers offered 2-pound packages. Shoppers are urged to carefully review packaging and UPC codes to confirm whether their purchase is affected.

Health Officials Stress No Illnesses Reported

While the mention of radioactive material may sound alarming, the FDA emphasized that no illnesses have been reported as of December 23, and no shrimp products sold in the U.S. have tested positive for Cesium-137 contamination.

Health officials note that long-term exposure to Cesium-137 can increase cancer risk, which is why the recall is being handled out of an abundance of caution.

What Consumers Should Do

Anyone who purchased the affected shrimp should:

  • Discard the product immediately, or
  • Return it to the store for a refund

Consumers are advised not to cook or consume the recalled shrimp.

Previous Recalls Raise Import Concerns

This is not the first time seafood from this supplier has triggered safety concerns. Earlier this year, the FDA issued another shrimp recall involving the same Indonesian company after Cesium-137 was detected at major U.S. ports, including Los Angeles, Houston, Miami, and Savannah.

That earlier action also affected frozen shrimp sold under Walmart’s Great Value brand, followed by a separate recall of imported cocktail shrimp weeks later.

Renewed Focus on Food Safety

With President Trump back in office, the situation underscores growing scrutiny over foreign food imports, supply chain oversight, and consumer protection — long-standing concerns for many American families.

Federal officials say monitoring is ongoing and additional updates will be provided if necessary.
