Trump means business when he says he’s cleaning up DC.
President Donald Trump is continuing his aggressive effort to restore law and order in Washington, D.C., ahead of America’s historic 250th anniversary celebration in 2026. On Friday, Trump gave a direct order to tear down a decades-old protest tent that has been sitting just steps from the White House for over 44 years.
The White House Peace Vigil, which has been continuously staffed since 1981, sits in Lafayette Square, directly across from the north side of the White House. The tent is draped with anti-war banners and far-left slogans, including one that reads, “War is not the answer.”
Trump Takes Immediate Action
During a meeting in the Oval Office, a reporter brought the vigil to Trump’s attention, describing it as a “radical left eyesore” that had been allowed to remain untouched for decades.
Trump was visibly frustrated upon learning about the tent’s presence.
“Take it down,” Trump ordered. “Take it down today — right now. Nobody told me that. We’ve removed over 50 illegal tent sites already, hundreds and hundreds of tents, maybe more than 1,000. This one will be next.”
This move is part of Trump’s broader initiative to clear homeless encampments and illegal structures across the nation’s capital. The president has repeatedly said these sites are dangerous, unsanitary, and a stain on America’s image ahead of its 250th birthday.
Congressional Support for Trump’s Crackdown
Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-NJ) has been a vocal supporter of Trump’s effort. Back in May, Van Drew sent a letter to the Department of the Interior, urging officials to review the legality of the vigil and shut it down if it was violating federal law.
“Nothing in the Constitution gives anyone the right to permanently occupy public land and turn it into a 24/7 protest camp,” Van Drew wrote. “These illegal structures create safety hazards, ruin the beauty of one of our nation’s most iconic parks, and place an unnecessary burden on both the District of Columbia and the National Park Service.”
Van Drew’s remarks reflect a growing frustration among conservatives who believe Washington, D.C., has been neglected for too long under weak leadership from Democrats.
Radical Left Pushback
The current caretaker of the tent, Philipos Melaku-Bello, 63, claims the vigil is protected by the First Amendment and vowed to resist efforts to dismantle it. He even keeps a handwritten copy of the Constitution inside the tent, symbolizing his defiance.
This is not the first time far-left activists have fought to keep the vigil standing. In past decades, previous administrations have faced criticism for allowing public parks to be overrun by protesters, while law-abiding Americans are forced to watch their national landmarks deteriorate.
Why Trump’s Action Matters
With America’s Semiquincentennial (250th birthday) approaching, Trump is determined to restore Washington, D.C., to its former glory. Clearing illegal encampments near the White House sends a strong message:
- Law and order will be enforced.
- Public safety comes first.
- America’s historic landmarks will be protected.
This decisive action is exactly why Trump continues to enjoy strong support among conservatives nationwide.
Bottom Line
For decades, the White House Peace Vigil has stood as a symbol of unchecked radical activism, cluttering one of the most visible and historic locations in America. By ordering its removal, President Trump is sending a clear signal: the era of chaos and decay in the nation’s capital is over.
With the 250th anniversary on the horizon, Trump’s efforts are a reminder that patriotism, safety, and respect for American history are once again top priorities in Washington.
