Will things actually get even worse for Democrats?
President Donald Trump is confident that the Republican Party will see a remarkable outcome in the 2026 midterm elections. At a recent gathering with GOP governors in Washington, Trump boldly declared, “I think we’re going to do great.” He acknowledged that in past presidential election cycles, midterm elections often don’t go in favor of the party in power, but he believes the GOP will defy that trend. “I think we’re going to increase our margins significantly,” Trump added with optimism.
Trump, now 78, shared with attendees that immediately following his victory, he directed his team to start fundraising for the 2026 elections. “We raised $608 million in just three weeks. Can you believe that?” he remarked. While he jokingly noted that if he were allowed to run for a third term, he’d use those funds to fuel his own campaign, Trump emphasized that he’s committed to using the money to help the Republican cause.
“I can’t use it for myself, but I’ve got a lot of friends, and I’ll be spending it to support them,” Trump said with a grin. He further pledged to continue reaching out to GOP donors and building up the party’s financial resources as the 2026 elections approach.
Trump also projected that the results of the upcoming midterm races would be a “big surprise,” suggesting the GOP will exceed expectations. He reminded the crowd of the 2018 midterms, which saw the Republicans lose control of the House but gain Senate seats. Currently, the GOP holds a 53-47 majority in the Senate, with 22 of the 35 Senate seats up for election in 2026 belonging to Republicans. Meanwhile, all 435 House seats will be contested, with Republicans holding a narrow three-seat advantage.
Looking ahead, Trump remains confident that the Republican Party is on track for a successful showing in 2026, thanks to a well-funded effort and a unified push across the country.
