Democrat John Fetterman made an interesting promise to Trump.
In a surprising moment of bipartisan support, Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) announced Thursday that he intends to vote in favor of President Donald Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Homeland Security.
Fetterman said he will support the confirmation of Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.), whom President Trump selected to replace outgoing Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.
The announcement immediately caught attention in Washington because Fetterman, a Democrat, has increasingly shown a willingness to break with his party on issues tied to national security, border enforcement, and immigration policy.
Fetterman Signals Support For Trump’s DHS Pick
Posting on social media platform X, Fetterman made it clear that he plans to vote “yes” when Mullin’s nomination comes before the Senate.
“As a member of the Homeland Security Committee and Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Border Security, I’m not sure how many fellow Democrats will vote to support our colleague Sen. Mullin as the next DHS Secretary — but I am AYE,” Fetterman wrote.
His statement suggests that Mullin could receive at least some bipartisan backing, a rare development in today’s deeply divided political environment.
Trump Announces Major Homeland Security Shakeup
President Trump revealed the cabinet change in a post on Truth Social, praising Mullin’s leadership and experience.
Trump wrote that he was proud to announce that Oklahoma Sen. Markwayne Mullin, whom he described as highly respected, will serve as the next Secretary of Homeland Security beginning March 31, 2026.
The president also thanked Kristi Noem for her work leading DHS and announced that she will transition to a new diplomatic position.
Trump said Noem will take on a new role as special envoy for a Western Hemisphere security initiative known as the “Shield of the Americas.”
First Cabinet Change Of Trump’s Second Term
Noem’s departure marks the first cabinet-level change of President Trump’s second term.
The Department of Homeland Security has been at the center of national debate over immigration enforcement during the past year as the administration pushed forward with stricter border security policies.
Supporters say the policies are necessary to restore order at the southern border and protect American communities. Critics, however, have accused DHS of being too aggressive in its enforcement strategy.
The controversy intensified after two U.S. citizens were fatally shot during federal immigration enforcement operations in Minneapolis, prompting investigations and calls for accountability.
A Democrat Willing To Break Party Lines
Fetterman’s support for Mullin highlights his reputation as one of the few Democrats willing to occasionally cross party lines.
The Pennsylvania senator previously voted with several Democrats — including Sens. Tim Kaine, Elissa Slotkin, and Maggie Hassan — to confirm Kristi Noem as DHS secretary last year.
Now, with Mullin stepping forward as Trump’s new choice to lead Homeland Security, Fetterman’s backing could give the nomination early momentum.
What Comes Next
Mullin’s nomination will now move through the Senate confirmation process, where lawmakers will examine his plans for border security, immigration enforcement, and national homeland protection.
For conservatives closely watching the issue of immigration and border security, the nomination represents another key moment in President Trump’s push to reshape federal immigration policy.
And with at least one Democrat already pledging support, the confirmation battle could become one of the most closely watched political developments in Washington this year.
