President Donald Trump is stepping into the fight for Texas as Republicans face an unexpectedly competitive U.S. Senate race that could have major consequences for control of Congress.
Trump announced Thursday that he plans to personally help Republican Senate nominee Ken Paxton defeat Democrat James Talarico, promising to spend significant time campaigning in the Lone Star State.
The move comes at a critical moment for Paxton, who has struggled to match his Democratic opponent’s fundraising operation while recent polls have raised concerns about a race Republicans once might have expected to win comfortably.
Now Trump is making it clear that he intends to fight.
“We’re going to Texas, and we’re working very hard, we wanna win that race,” Trump said during remarks at the White House.
Trump also went after Talarico personally, using the nickname “Tala-freako” and arguing that the Democrat does not represent traditional Texas values.
“That’s not a man that represents the value of Texas,” Trump said.
Then came the promise Paxton’s campaign may have been waiting for.
“I’m going to help Ken Paxton and I’m gonna spend a lot of time in Texas,” Trump declared.
For Republicans worried about losing ground in one of America’s most important conservative states, Trump’s intervention could provide Paxton with a badly needed political and financial boost.
Trump Heads To Texas As Senate Race Heats Up
Trump’s support isn’t limited to an endorsement.
The president headed to Texas Thursday as Republicans work to raise money and build enthusiasm ahead of the November midterm elections.
Trump was scheduled to headline a major Republican fundraiser in Houston while lending his support to Paxton’s campaign.
That could prove especially important because Paxton has faced a serious fundraising disadvantage.
Talarico has poured millions of dollars into advertising across Texas, while Paxton and Republican groups have been far quieter on television.
That imbalance has attracted attention from Republicans who understand what losing a Senate seat in Texas could mean nationally.

Paxton now has to defeat a Democratic opponent who has demonstrated an ability to raise substantial amounts of money and compete in recent polling.
Warning Signs Emerge For Republicans
Recent polling has given Republicans reason to pay close attention.
Several surveys have shown an extremely competitive contest, while some have placed Talarico ahead of Paxton.

Some Republicans Questioned Trump’s Paxton Endorsement
Not every Republican was thrilled when Trump chose Paxton over Cornyn.
Some GOP donors reportedly worried that Paxton would be a more vulnerable general-election candidate because of his past controversies.
Those concerns have become harder to dismiss as polling has tightened.
