Liz Cheney is in for a big surprise.
President Trump recently predicted that former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) is facing serious legal trouble, following revelations from a new report issued by House Republicans. The report, which was compiled by the House Committee on Administration’s Oversight Subcommittee, suggests that Cheney’s actions during her time as vice-chair of the Jan. 6 Select Committee may have involved illegal conduct. It specifically calls for a criminal investigation into Cheney, accusing her of potential violations of federal law. In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated, “Liz Cheney could be in a lot of trouble based on the evidence obtained by the subcommittee, which states that ‘several federal laws were probably broken by Liz Cheney, and these acts need to be investigated by the FBI.’”
Trump also expressed his support for Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-Ga.), the chairman of the subcommittee, who led the investigation into the Jan. 6 committee’s actions. The subcommittee’s 128-page interim report heavily criticized the now-defunct Jan. 6 committee, accusing it of being a politically motivated effort designed to unfairly blame Trump for the Capitol riot and tarnish his legacy. According to the report, the Select Committee was a “political weapon” that lacked credibility and sought to deceive the public about the events of January 6.
The subcommittee further alleged that Cheney, in her role on the committee, engaged in improper communication with former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson, which they suggest could amount to witness tampering. Cheney, who has been one of Trump’s most vocal critics since the 2020 election, strongly denied the allegations. She dismissed the report as a “malicious and cowardly assault on the truth,” claiming that it was full of “lies” and “defamatory” claims.
In addition to questioning Cheney’s conduct, Republican lawmakers have accused the Jan. 6 committee of tampering with evidence, alleging that key materials were deleted or otherwise withheld. However, members of the disbanded committee have defended their work, insisting that all evidence was handled according to legal requirements and made publicly available through official channels.
As the investigation into Cheney’s actions unfolds, it marks another chapter in the ongoing battle over the politicization of the Jan. 6 probe. For many Republicans, this report represents a call for accountability and a chance to expose the truth about how the Jan. 6 committee operated—an effort they believe was driven more by partisan interests than a genuine pursuit of justice.
