This needed to happen a long time ago. Thankfully, President Trump is doing it now!
President Donald Trump is poised to sign an executive order declaring English as the official language of the United States, a move aimed at reinforcing national unity and American values. This decision, confirmed by Fox News Digital, will take place later today and will effectively undo a policy put in place by former President Bill Clinton in 2000. That mandate required federal agencies and recipients of federal funding to offer language assistance to non-English speakers.
While the U.S. has never had an official language throughout its history, every significant document, including the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, has been written in English. Despite this, the U.S. remains one of the few countries—out of nearly 200 globally—that has not officially declared a national language. According to a White House official, around 180 countries have established official languages, highlighting America’s unique position on the matter.
Under the new executive order, it will be up to individual federal agencies to determine whether to provide services in languages other than English. Trump has long advocated for English as the unifying language of the nation, speaking out against the growing number of languages being introduced into American society. In a 2024 speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), Trump criticized the Biden administration’s immigration policies, pointing out the lack of resources for teaching and integrating non-English-speaking immigrants.
The new executive order is designed to honor the efforts of multilingual Americans who have embraced English and passed it on to future generations. It also seeks to encourage immigrants to succeed by providing a common language that will help them achieve the American dream.
Trump’s administration has been active in reshaping national policy through executive orders, with over 76 signed since he returned to office in January. These orders have included efforts to better reflect the nation’s history and values, such as renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America and restoring the name Mount McKinley to the tallest peak in North America. This new initiative is part of a broader agenda to preserve and celebrate the core principles that make America great.
