Trump and the GOP have a new plan.
Washington, D.C. — Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) has thrown a political grenade into Washington’s budget standoff, unveiling a full-year Pentagon funding bill that dares Democrats to vote against America’s military — and risk political backlash.
The move comes as President Donald Trump stands firm in his effort to end reckless government overspending while protecting U.S. troops and national security.
Thune Challenges Democrats: “Put America First or Face the Voters”
On Thursday, the Senate will vote on the defense bill, which ensures military paychecks continue without interruption, even as Democrats block temporary funding plans for the ninth time.
“This is what Democrats said they wanted — a normal appropriations process,” Thune said. “If they keep voting to keep the government shut down, we’ll keep moving forward without them.”
The bipartisan bill passed committee earlier this year by an overwhelming 26–3 vote, proving that funding our troops isn’t controversial — unless politics gets in the way.
Trump Keeps Troops Paid While Democrats Play Games
While the left wrings its hands over political optics, President Trump is making sure the military doesn’t suffer. The administration has already secured $8 billion in unused defense research funds to guarantee that American soldiers get paid — shutdown or not.
It’s a direct contrast between Trump’s action and the Democrats’ obstruction.
Democrats Divided and Confused
Top Democrats like Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Patty Murray (D-Wash.) were visibly uncomfortable when asked if they’d back the defense bill. Both ducked the question, claiming they need to “see what Republicans attach.”
Other Democrats privately admit they’re worried. One insider told reporters, “If we vote no, it looks like we’re voting against the troops.”
Even Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), who supports several provisions in the bill, refused to commit — choosing party politics over progress.
Republicans Stay Focused on Reopening America
Senate Republicans plan to expand the Pentagon bill to include funding for Labor, Health and Human Services, Transportation, and Commerce, offering Democrats more of what they claim to want — yet they continue to stall.
In the House, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) slammed Democrats for refusing to negotiate. “They’re playing the same political games,” Johnson said. “Americans see it. The troops see it. And they’re tired of it.”
The Bottom Line
While President Trump and Senate Republicans work to restore fiscal sanity and keep America’s military funded, Democrats are crying foul — more interested in partisan optics than national security.
If Democrats vote “no” on this Pentagon bill, they’ll be forced to explain why they chose politics over paychecks for the men and women who defend this country.
