Newsom Loses Badly To Trump

Trump wins again.

California is now revoking 17,000 commercial driver’s licenses issued to noncitizens after a stunning discovery that many licenses were set to expire long after the drivers’ legal status in the United States had already ended. Officials confirmed the move Wednesday, marking one of the largest licensing recalls in state history.

The bombshell announcement comes as the Trump administration continues sounding the alarm over states—especially California—placing unvetted, unauthorized drivers behind the wheel of massive commercial vehicles that travel America’s highways and school routes.

Trump Administration: California Was “Caught Red-Handed”

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy blasted Gov. Gavin Newsom’s administration, calling the mass revocation an admission that California knowingly violated the law.

“Newsom’s people denied everything for weeks, and now they’ve been exposed,” Duffy said. “Seventeen thousand illegal licenses are being revoked because California broke the rules. And this is only the beginning.”

Duffy said his team will continue pressing states to remove illegal immigrants from behind the wheel of semis, buses, and hazardous-materials carriers before more American lives are put at risk.

California only launched its review after Duffy demanded accountability.

Newsom Scrambles to Explain

Newsom’s office initially refused to reveal why these licenses were being revoked. Later, they admitted the state failed to follow its own law requiring commercial licenses to expire when a person’s legal status expires.

Instead, thousands of licenses extended far beyond legally allowed dates—despite repeated warnings from federal officials.

Still, Newsom’s spokesperson attacked Duffy personally, accusing him of “spreading falsehoods.” The political spin did little to calm concerns among taxpayers, law-enforcement groups, and trucking associations nationwide.

Deadly Truck Crashes Spark Outrage

The public’s anger is fueled by a series of deadly accidents involving drivers who were in the U.S. illegally:

  • Florida: A trucker not authorized to be in the country made an illegal U-turn, killing three Americans.
  • Texas & Alabama: Fatal crashes earlier this year linked to unlicensed, noncitizen drivers.
  • California: A fiery wreck last month killed three more people.

These tragedies have intensified demands for strict border enforcement, tighter license verification, and severe penalties for states that put politics above public safety.

Trump Administration Tightens CDL Rules Nationwide

Secretary Duffy rolled out sweeping reforms this fall to restore integrity to the commercial driver system:

  • Only visa holders in H-2A, H-2B, or E-2 categories will qualify for commercial licenses.
  • Every state must verify immigration status using a federal database.
  • Licenses will last no longer than one year—or less if a visa expires sooner.

Under these rules, only 10,000 of the 200,000 noncitizens currently holding commercial licenses nationwide would still qualify.

The remaining 190,000 drivers can keep their licenses only until renewal, ensuring a slow but steady correction of the system.

California Faces Major Financial Penalties

The Trump administration has already revoked $40 million in federal funds from California for failing to enforce English-language requirements for truckers.

Duffy warned Wednesday that an additional $160 million will be cut if the state refuses to cancel every illegal license and fully comply with federal standards.

The 17,000 revocations appear to be California’s first step toward avoiding those massive financial losses.

Federal Audit Reveals Serious Failures

Federal investigators reviewed California’s licensing system and found:

  • 25% of licenses should never have been issued
  • Multiple licenses stayed valid years after drivers’ work permits expired
  • State officials ignored or misapplied federal guidance

Newsom’s office now claims it was following instructions from the Department of Homeland Security—an explanation critics say is falling apart under scrutiny.

Bottom Line

This massive recall represents a major defeat for Gov. Gavin Newsom and a clear victory for President Trump’s renewed focus on law-and-order, strong borders, and putting American safety first.
