Democrat Plan To Stop Trump Backfires

House Republicans delivered a decisive blow to Democrats on Thursday, shutting down an aggressive attempt to limit President Donald Trump’s military authority during a fragile ceasefire with Iran.

The failed move is the latest example of how Democrat-led efforts to block Trump’s foreign policy agenda are collapsing under pressure—despite growing media attention and political messaging.

Republicans Shut Down Democrat Power Grab

In a brief pro forma session, Democrats led by Glenn Ivey attempted to fast-track a war powers resolution that would have forced an immediate halt to U.S. military actions against Iran.

The proposal also aimed to strip President Trump of the ability to respond militarily without prior approval from Congress—a move critics say would weaken America’s position on the global stage.

But the effort never got off the ground.

Presiding over the session, Chris Smith swiftly adjourned before recognizing Ivey, effectively blocking the resolution and handing Republicans a clear procedural victory.

Democrats Demand Urgent Action—But Get Stopped Cold

After the failed attempt, Ivey pushed back, insisting Congress must intervene immediately.

At the same time, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries ramped up pressure, demanding lawmakers return from recess to vote on limiting Trump’s authority.

Jeffries argued the current two-week ceasefire is “not enough” and called for permanent restrictions on military action in the Middle East.

But there’s one major problem:
The House isn’t even in session.

Lawmakers are currently on recess and are not expected back until mid-April—stalling Democrat momentum once again.

Trump Administration Claims Major Victory

While Democrats push for restrictions, the Trump administration is signaling strength.

Officials are calling Operation Epic Fury a major success, saying it has:

  • Severely weakened Iran’s strategic capabilities
  • Restored American deterrence
  • Forced adversaries back to the negotiating table

Vice President JD Vance, along with envoy Steve Witkoff and advisor Jared Kushner, are preparing for high-stakes talks in Pakistan.

The outcome could reshape the balance of power in the region.

Even Some Republicans Break Ranks

Despite strong GOP backing of Trump, a few Republicans have shown openness to revisiting war powers limits.

Among them:

  • Nancy Mace
  • Thomas Massie
  • Warren Davidson

Still, any serious challenge faces a steep uphill battle—especially with Trump’s veto power looming over Congress.

Senate Democrats Prepare Next Move

Over in the Senate, Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is planning yet another vote to curb Trump’s war authority.

Schumer has blasted the administration’s actions, calling them among the worst foreign policy decisions in U.S. history.

But so far, those warnings haven’t translated into results.

Bottom Line: Democrat Strategy Falls Apart

Despite repeated attempts, Democrats are struggling to gain traction against a Republican-led House that continues to stand firmly behind President Trump.

With negotiations underway and geopolitical tensions still high, one thing is clear:

Efforts to rein in Trump’s military authority are facing serious resistance—and, so far, falling short.
