Traitors like this should no longer call themselves Republican.
Former Georgia Republican Lieutenant Governor Geoff Duncan recently criticized former President Trump for jeopardizing crucial government funding by insisting on the inclusion of a proof of citizenship requirement for voting. During an interview on CNN’s “NewsNight With Abby Phillip,” Duncan expressed his frustration, labeling Trump as “not God” and a “loser” for his actions.
Duncan’s ire stemmed from Trump’s demand that Republicans prioritize the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act (SAVE) alongside the stopgap funding measure. Trump’s stance, urging that no Continuing Resolution should be passed without the SAVE Act, drew strong rebuke from Duncan, who articulated his mixed feelings about the situation. He lamented the cycle of political brinkmanship, questioning whether he was more upset with Trump’s interference in sensible legislation or with the apparent ignorance of some lawmakers who seem oblivious to the repercussions of their actions.
The fallout from Trump’s demands saw 14 Republican representatives voting against the funding bill, aligned with most Democrats, effectively derailing the Republican spending plan. Duncan emphasized his frustration, noting the absurdity of the situation: “We’ve already budgeted the money; we just don’t want to write the checks for it.” He drew a parallel to everyday financial responsibility, suggesting that failing to uphold commitments has real consequences in people’s lives, unlike the political games being played in Washington.
Duncan concluded that it is imperative for Republicans to shift their focus toward constructive governance. He urged the party to become a force for problem-solving, emphasizing the need to collaborate across the aisle rather than engage in self-sabotage. It’s time for Republicans to prioritize effective leadership and responsible policy-making that benefits all Americans.
