As millions of Americans prepare to celebrate the nation’s 250th birthday, former President Barack Obama is once again stirring debate over how the country’s founding should be remembered.
During a Sunday interview with MSNOW, Obama praised the brilliance of America’s Founding Fathers while arguing that their legacy cannot be separated from their role in preserving slavery.
His comments come just days before President Donald Trump’s America 250 celebration, a nationwide effort highlighting the nation’s history, founding principles, military heritage, and enduring patriotism.
Obama Says America’s Founders Had a “Deep Flaw”
Obama said Americans should recognize both the accomplishments and failures of the nation’s earliest leaders.
“I think sometimes we get confused in thinking that these two stories are separate. They’re intertwined,” Obama said.
Using George Washington as an example, Obama explained that he can admire the first president while also acknowledging that Washington owned slaves.
“That does not negate his greatness,” Obama said. “It simply acknowledges that there’s a profound deep flaw in these Founding Fathers who were also geniuses and gave us these tools.”
Obama added that America has always been a nation filled with contradictions.
“We’re this mixed bag,” he said. “We’ve got contradictions.”
Remarks Come Ahead of America’s 250th Birthday
Obama’s interview arrives as communities across the country prepare for one of the biggest patriotic celebrations in American history.
The 250th anniversary of American independence is expected to feature parades, fireworks, military displays, concerts, historical reenactments, and ceremonies honoring the nation’s founding.
President Trump has made the anniversary a major priority, promoting America 250 as a celebration of American exceptionalism, freedom, and the country’s remarkable history.
Obama, however, used the approaching milestone to encourage Americans to reflect on what he described as the nation’s unfinished journey toward fulfilling its founding ideals.
Similar Comments at Obama Presidential Center
The former president has made several public appearances this month following the opening of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago.
The sprawling campus includes a museum, library facilities, educational programs, and community spaces dedicated to Obama’s legacy.
During the center’s opening ceremony, Obama delivered a similar message about the nation’s founding.
“The success of this experiment was never a given,” he said.
Obama argued that while the Founding Fathers left slavery intact and allowed many states to limit voting rights to white male property owners, they also created the Constitution and Bill of Rights, providing future generations with the tools to expand liberty and improve the country.
Conservatives Continue Debating America’s Founding
Obama’s latest comments have renewed a long-running national debate over how America’s history should be taught and remembered.
Many conservatives argue that Independence Day should primarily celebrate the courage, sacrifice, and vision of the Founding Fathers, emphasizing the principles of liberty and self-government that transformed world history.
Others believe the nation’s greatest achievements can be recognized while also acknowledging the injustices that existed during the country’s earliest years.
As America marks 250 years of independence, the discussion over the nation’s founding remains one of the country’s most enduring political and cultural debates.
Obama’s Family History Has Also Drawn Attention
Obama’s remarks also revived discussion surrounding his own ancestry.
During his rise to national politics, genealogical researchers discovered that some of Obama’s white ancestors owned slaves in the United States.
In 2007, then-Obama spokesman Bill Burton confirmed that while one branch of the former president’s family had owned slaves, another relative fought for the Union during the Civil War.
The topic resurfaced in later political debates, including comments made by Republican leaders during Obama’s presidency.
America 250 Celebration Expected to Draw Millions
With the nation’s 250th birthday now just days away, millions of Americans are expected to participate in celebrations honoring the country’s founding, military service members, veterans, and the constitutional freedoms that have shaped the United States for nearly two and a half centuries.
Whether Americans agree with Obama’s historical perspective or prefer Trump’s patriotic focus, the anniversary is expected to become one of the largest national celebrations in decades.
