President Donald Trump found himself at the center of attention Sunday after a brief moment during the FIFA World Cup final sparked widespread discussion online.
While attending the championship match between Spain and Argentina at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, Trump appeared on the stadium’s giant video board during the pregame ceremonies. Almost immediately, a portion of the crowd responded with audible boos, according to videos shared from inside the stadium and portions of the television broadcast.
The president attended the historic match alongside First Lady Melania Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who has developed a close working relationship with Trump in recent years.
Although the reaction was noticeable inside the stadium, it lasted only a few moments before fans shifted their attention back to the World Cup final, one of the most-watched sporting events in the world.
The incident marked the second time in recent months that Trump has faced boos at a major sporting event in the New York-New Jersey area. During another high-profile event earlier this summer, the president also received a mixed reception after being shown on the stadium’s video screens during the National Anthem.

Despite the brief crowd reaction, Trump remained one of the evening’s featured guests.
Following Spain’s dramatic 1-0 victory over Argentina in extra time, Trump joined FIFA President Gianni Infantino on the field for the championship trophy presentation, placing him at the center of one of international soccer’s biggest moments.
Trump and Infantino have maintained a strong relationship through multiple FIFA events. In late 2025, Infantino presented Trump with FIFA’s inaugural Peace Prize, underscoring the organization’s ongoing partnership with the president ahead of the tournament.
Before kickoff, Trump also sat down with Fox Sports to discuss the highly anticipated championship match.
Asked about the showdown between Spain and Argentina, Trump praised Argentine superstar Lionel Messi and suggested it was difficult to bet against one of soccer’s greatest players.
“It’s hard to bet against Messi,” Trump said. “He’s great.”
Spain ultimately proved the stronger side, defeating Argentina 1-0 in extra time to capture the FIFA World Cup title before a global television audience of hundreds of millions.
The crowd’s reaction to Trump’s appearance has since generated significant attention across social media, with videos from inside MetLife Stadium quickly spreading online as supporters and critics debated the moment.
